Who is eligible to apply?

Current freshman, sophomores, and juniors in high school.

How much does the program cost?

The entire cost of the program including lodging, food and all supplemental activities is $650. This does not include travel expenses.

What can I expect to "do" at the program?

  1. Outdoor Experiences: From canoeing the Upper Iowa, to exploring Coldwater Cave, to fish sampling on local trout streams, students will have daily field trips designed to expose them to the beauty of Northeast Iowa and provide hands–on learning experiences in the outdoors.
  2. Sustainability/Environmental Studies Content: Through field trips, guest lectures, readings, activities, etc. the students will learn essential knowledge about soil, water, energy, biodiversity and other aspects of sustainability.
  3. Team Building Skills: Emphasis will be placed on activities and experiences designed to nurture development of essential skills for team building, collaboration, and leadership.
  4. Research: Students will work with a team of their peers to investigate a topic of interest related to sustainability and present the findings to the rest of the group at the end of the week as a way to gain invaluable preparation for college.

Where will I stay during the program?

This program is intended to introduce high school students to college life. Students will be assigned to a residential suite within one of the Luther College residence halls. All meals will be provided, but students will need to bring their own bedding or sleeping bag.
