Speakers

Michael J. Engelhardt, professor of political science at Luther College, presented "Sanctuaries and Slammed Doors: Immigration, Arizona and the Constitution" on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010.  His presentation outlined what the U.S. Constitution says about immigration, discussed previous state/federal interactions on immigration, and expounded on why state and local governments feel compelled to act in an area traditionally reserved for the national government.

Maynard Anderson spoke to the Global Citizenship andamp; Political Leadership courses on Monday, March 8, 2010.

Residencies

Sarah Tofte, who works for Human Rights Watch in New York City, was on campus in early February as a Lilly Vocation Visitor. Tofte has degrees from Luther in 1999 and Minnesota Law School. She was our guest speaker at the Pre-Law dinner on Wednesday, February 21 in Nobel Dining Room.

Judge John Anderson visited from Sunday, December 3 through Thursday, December 7. Anderson, who graduated from Luther in 1985 with a political science major, currently serves as a trial court judge in Wisconsin's 10th judicial circuit. While on campus, Anderson talked about law and the courts in American Politics, Introduction to Law and Constitutional Law classes. In addition, he chatted informally with students about the practice of law. Anderson noted many physical changes on the campus in the twenty years since he graduated; the last time he was in Marty's, for example, it was a bowling alley. And, as with many alumni returning to Decorah, he insisted that one of the conversations take place over a Mabe's pizza. The Department of Political Science and the Center for Ethics and Public Affairs sponsored Anderson's visit.
