Welcome to the Parents e-Newsletter

Ann Highum

Welcome to our final parents e-newsletter of the year!

As spring finally arrives in the Midwest, some of you are thinking about having your student home for the summer—or perhaps you’re getting used to the idea that your son or daughter won’t be home.

Or, if you’re the parent of a graduating senior, you probably have many feelings, as you share their excitement and mixed emotions about their future plans.

We feel the same way here! We’ll really miss the students who have contributed so much to our community over the past four years. And we’ll eagerly welcome back the ones who are spending the summer away from here.

My husband and I have now survived having two sons attend sister colleges, and we remember that first summer each was at home after their first year of college. Some of you will have the same questions we did: “Should we even try to have a curfew?” (we gave up)… "Will he want his old room back—the room that is now a guest room?” (yes, and we kept the door shut)… "How has he changed during this year of independence?” (a lot—he could actually run his own schedule, and get to work on time!). And because this summer will be the first ever without one of our sons at home, we have a whole new experience ahead of us. I think we’ll be fine!

By now, your student should have registered for classes and will soon complete room draw. Check out the “Parents Room” segment written by Residence Life for important hall closing information.

Hopefully, our students are excited about the learning opportunities they see ahead for next fall. If your student is thinking about an internship next January term or spring semester, she or he should be looking at options and networking with potential sites this summer! If study abroad next J-term or spring semester is a goal, he or she should be well into that planning as well. Ask how the next few years can be planned to maximize various learning options, both in and out of the classroom.

Curious about what all this preparation means for employment? Here's a link to the Career Center’s recently completed report on what members of the class of 2007 are doing: www.luther.edu/student-life/careers/about/reports/. I think you’ll be amazed!

Oh, and those grade reports? Remember, the Registrar’s office doesn’t mail them anymore. The easiest way to discover how your student has done academically is to have him/her get into his/her my.luther.edu (http://my.luther.edu) account and show you those grades directly!

Have a great summer!
