Luther College has an unusually large and experienced voice faculty who are skilled in teaching vocal technique. Singers at Luther College who are serious about their study also have the opportunity to work with a vocal coach on our faculty to deepen their understanding and execution of the music they sing, whether art song, oratorio, or operatic repertoire.
Upon the recommendation of their voice teachers, advanced singers may register for weekly coaching sessions that will complement their continued voice study. Among other things, singers can learn more about principles of diction (French, German, Italian, and English), musical style, and subtleties of interpretation and characterization. Typically, the coach will play piano for these sessions, illuminating musical ideas for the singer through her playing. In preparation for a specific performance, the singer is encouraged to bring in his/her collaborative partner, and both young artists will receive instruction as a unit.
