Adam Graf is a junior at Luther College and a second-year member of the Jazz Orchestra. In addition to playing bass in Jazz Orchestra, Adam plays with Luther College Jazz Combo and Luther College Symphony Orchestra as well as collaborating with a wide variety of students and faculty in various side projects. As a Music Education major, Adam has his sights set on teaching within the next few years, with an emphasis in strings. In his spare time, Adam is an avid reader and writer and enjoys a recreational interest in game design.
Aidan Schmitt has been a member of Jazz Orchestra for two years. He plays drum set for one of the jazz combos at Luther, as well as for other events both on and off campus. Aidan studies classical piano at Luther and is a Music and Computer Science double major. Aidan lives in Apple Valley, MN, and is a sophomore at Luther.
Andrew Murray is a first year music major from North Mankato, Minnesota. He has been playing guitar since the age of 11. In addition to music, he enjoys photography and running. Andrew plans to teach guitar and continue performing in the coming years.
Jordan Cox is a Junior from Baraboo, Wisconsin. He is a Music major interested in Music Performance (saxophone) and Instrument Repair, and he is currently studying the flute, clarinet, saxophone and jazz improvisation. In addition to Luther College Jazz Orchestra, Jordan participates in the Luther College Concert Band (Bass Clarinet), Clarinet Choir (Eb clarinet), and Tuba Euphonium Ensemble (tuba).
Jacob McCoy is a senior at Luther College with a Biology major and Music minor. He has been involved in multiple instrumental ensembles since his first year, including four years in the jazz program and two years in Jazz Orchestra. He plans to attend a graduate program in the near future.
Jakob Jorgenson is a junior Computer Science and Music double major at Luther College. He aspires to become a programmer by day and a trumpet performer by night. This is his second year as a member of the Jazz Orchestra, though he has been an active jazz musician for many years prior. Jakob is also a member of the Luther College Concert Band, Chamber Orchestra, and Trumpet Studio. He enjoys playing video games with friends and playing trumpet in his free time.
As a sophomore, Jonathon joins Jazz Orchestra playing alto saxophone for the first time. He has been involved in music since he was three, playing piano, clarinet, and finally arriving at the saxophone, due to his interest in jazz. Jonathon first became involved in jazz in sixth grade in the middle school jazz band on the piano, and later switched to the saxophone in grade eight. Apart from his commitments to the Jazz Orchestra, Jonathon is majoring in Physics with minors in Computer Science and Math, and hopes to later go into astronomy and study star systems or interplanetary travel.
Joshua Jones (lead alto, tenor and soprano saxophones) is a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minnesota who is seeking a Music Performance major. At Luther, he plays in the Jazz Orchestra and the Luther College Jazz Combo. Joshua has played with some of the best musicians in the Twin Cities jazz scene. His mentor is Irv Williams, a 95 year old saxophonist and a jazz legend in the Twin Cities area. Joshua occasionally plays with Irv’s group at the Dakota Jazz Club. Joshua wants to become a professional jazz musician and aside from music, Joshua also plays soccer and chess.
Joy Harris is a junior from Rochester, MN. She is a Biology major with minors in Chemistry and Spanish, and her goal after Luther is to attend medical school and work as a doctor. Along with studying science, she enjoys participating in music, and she has been involved in a variety of ensembles over the past three years. Joy currently plays saxophone in the Jazz Orchestra, sings in Gospel Choir, the women's choir Cantorei, and takes piano lessons. She is also involved in College Ministries and serves as a student leader for FOCUS, a student-led worship service held on Sunday nights.
Lily Brondyke is a first year member of the Luther College Jazz Orchestra and so far she has loved every minute spent with the group. She is a sophomore Biology and Chemistry double major with an English (writing) minor. She loves almost every minute of that. In addition to Jazz Orchestra, Lily plays in the Luther College Symphony Orchestra and The Golden Tones, an all-female brass quintet.
Evan Mattsen plays the tenor saxophone as a senior member of the Luther College Jazz Orchestra. The first jazz album that he ever owned was Dexter Gordon's "GO." He has been studying Religion as a major and Sociology as a minor in his four years at Luther. Evan loves playing a variety of sports for fun, including soccer and snowboarding.
Michael Callen is a junior at Luther College, and a second-year member of the Jazz Orchestra. He began piano lessons at age 5, and has studied jazz extensively since the beginning of high school, gaining performance experience on the four main rhythm section instruments (piano, bass, guitar, drums). When not playing music, he is an active member and President of Omega Omega Omega fraternity, a representative on Student Senate, a returning player on Luther's Ultimate Frisbee B-Team, and a multi-interest student majoring in Economics with a Public Policy emphasis. He hopes to use his degree to either conduct demographical research related to America's education system, be involved in education reform itself, or to work on reducing social costs in environmental economic policy.
Robert Starr is a senior Chemistry and Education major in his second year playing bass trombone with the Jazz Orchestra. When he’s not proverbially “dropping the bass” in Jazz Orchestra, Robert is often found playing or teaching board games, particularly Magic the Gathering. He is currently employed as a T.A. at North Winneshiek Middle School where he hones his teaching prowess for his future work as a science educator.
Sam Thrun is a junior Management major at Luther College. He has been playing with Jazz Orchestra for two years and has been playing Jazz for almost ten years. Sam is also involved in Pep band, Tuba/euphonium ensemble and a barbershop quartet at Luther College. In his time at Luther, Sam has participated in Wind and Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Trombone Choir, and the all-male choir Norsemen. Sam hopes to go into emergency medicine, specifically PA school eventually and become director of flight for life.
Jessie is a senior graduating with a double major in Management and Communication Studies. She has completed her senior paper on Music in Advertising: Strengthening Your Brand Identity, and wants to pursue a career in Marketing after graduation. Jessie loves to travel, and has been to eight different countries through programs at Luther. This is her first year in the Jazz Orchestra, but she was always involved in jazz bands while growing up in Freeport, IL. Outside of Jazz Orchestra, she is a member of the Luther College Concert Band, and the Fundraising Chair & Treasurer of the student-run Pep Band. Jessie has been playing the trumpet for 12 years and plans to continue playing after she graduates from Luther this spring.
Currently in his final semester at Luther, Ben has spent two years with Luther College Jazz Orchestra. While at Luther, Ben was the principal trombonist with Luther College Symphony Orchestra for four years. He has also performed with several chamber ensembles as well as with Aurora, Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, and Collegiate Chorale as part of a featured ensemble. While taking a hiatus from Luther in the fall, Ben familiarized himself with the musical scene of Kansas City, including several performances with Musical Theater Heritage under executive director George Harter of NPR's "A Night on the Town" and artistic director Sarah Crawford. He also performed with The People's Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City, Kansas City's premier new jazz ensemble. Ben will graduate in May with a degree in Music and minor in Mathematics. After Luther, Ben plans to pursue graduate studies in trombone performance.
Jack Ross is a sophomore at Luther College, pursuing a major in Communication Studies and a minor in Business Management. He plans to pursue a career in radio broadcasting. Jack has been involved in music since age 9, started playing jazz in middle school, and this is now his first year performing with the Jazz Orchestra. Jack sings with the Cathedral Choir at Luther, plays guitar, bass guitar, and some piano.
Outside of playing trombone in the Jazz Orchestra, Chris O'Connell plays in both the Luther College Concert Band as well as Trombone Choir. His love of jazz started back in junior high when he joined his school’s jazz band, and he has been playing ever since. Chris is a first year majoring in Music Education and plans to get a masters in composition or conducting in hopes of becoming a High School band director, or even becoming a part of a professional orchestra. Outside of music, Chris is an Eagle Scout and an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys spending his time hiking the mountains, rock climbing, canoeing and camping.
Eric is senior from Des Moines, Iowa. Outside of Jazz Orchestra, Eric is active in jazz combos, chamber groups, and is principle trumpet of the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the track and field team at Luther, specializing in 400s. This past summer, he was a member of the Colts Drum and Bugle corps. After graduation, Eric will go on to student teach in instrumental music, and continue the process to becoming a band director.
