Dr. Helen (Hoff) James joined the Luther College Music Faculty as part-time adjunct bassoon teacher for the Fall 2009 Semester. She earned her B.A. from Luther College before receiving her M.M. and D.M.A. at the University of Oregon. Dr. James has also done additional private study with Arthur Grossman of the University of Washington.
Dr. James’s prior teaching experience includes five years at M-F-L Community School in Monona, Iowa; three years at Fife School District in Tacoma, Washington; and thirteen years at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Dr. James has extensive performing experience in chamber music, as a recitalist, and as principal bassoonist in orchestras. She has appeared as bassoon soloist with orchestras in Washington, Oregon, and Colorado, and she has served as a bassoon clinician and adjudicator. Her articles have been published in The Instrumentalist and The School Musician and Teacher.
Dr. James is a founding member of Oneota Winds, the Luther College Faculty Woodwind Quintet. She is an active member of First Lutheran Church where she performs frequently and sings in the Chancel Choir. Her other interests include running, walking, golfing, quilting, knitting, and reading.
