Festival and Chamber Orchestras

Students are nominated and ranked by their school directors. Membership and seat assignments are based on the ranking and recommendations of the director and on the needs of the Festival groups. Fair and accurate orchestra assignments will depend on complete information from individual high school directors.  Students in the larger ensemble will be given a chair assignment and copies of their music before they come to the Festival. Those in the Chamber Orchestra will receive their music in advance, but chair placement will be based on a short audition at the beginning of the Festival. They will be asked to play a portion of the Festival music for the audition. The expectation is that students will be very familiar with their music before they arrive.

Students from schools that do not have a formal orchestra program are welcome, if nominated by their private teacher and/or another music teacher in their high school.

Students accepted will be divided into a small “chamber orchestra” and and a larger Festival ensemble.. The Chamber Orchestra, traditionally made up of more experienced students, will perform literature more suited to a smaller, more advanced group.

Students from schools that do not have a formal orchestra program are welcome, if nominated by their private teacher and/or another music teacher in their high school.

Concert tickets

No tickets are required for the Festival Grand Concert on Monday, Feb. 9. The concert is free and open to all who can attend.

Housing

On-campus housing may be requested. Students will be housed with Luther orchestra members if possible. Others will be housed in secure residence hall study lounges. The cost of on-campus housing is $5.00 per night.

Overnight guests should plan to bring along sleeping bags, air mattresses, pillows, etc. as well as towels and toiletries for their overnight stays. Think of the experience as “camping” in a dorm!

Limited commercial lodging is also available. For a list of area options, check the Luther website at www.luther.edu/about/decorah/lodging or call the Dorian office at 563-387-1389

Lesson

Students wishing to schedule a private lesson with a faculty member will still be able to do so. Private lessons will be 20 minutes long, instead of the previous 10 minutes. Students who schedule private lessons will have opportunity for face-to-face, one-on-one feedback. It is assumed that a student who requests a private lesson will bring to the lesson some previously studied solo piece: perhaps a concerto movement, a sonata movement, or a movement or two of unaccompanied Bach. The fee for one 20-minute private lesson will be $10. Seniors interested in Luther may, of course, still use their lesson as their official scholarship audition, if they wish.  No accompanist is required. The student will receive both verbal and written comments from the faculty teacher.

Two or three students may be chosen from among those playing in a mini-lesson to perform their solos as part of the Grand Concert on Monday evening. Solos must be memorized to be considered. The solo/mini-lesson can be used as an official Luther music scholarship audition by Seniors who are prospective Luther students.

Student supervision

We encourage and enjoy the presence of high school directors, but their presence is not required for a student to participate. Other adult chaperones often stand in for the directors. In rare situations, high school students drive themselves to the Festival, but we require that they turn in their car keys to us while the Festival is happening.
