Luther College will host an evening of new music composed by members of Luther's composition studio. Out of the 15 student composers in this year's composition studio, five students have been selected to present their pieces at 9 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Works to be performed include solo, chamber and electronic music with video.
Pieces being performed include "1 of 2 things…" by Caleb Sander for solo piano; "I'm Wearing My Heart Away" by Shafer Stromwall for brass quintet; "String Quintet" by Christopher O'Connell; and "Spiral Miniatures" by Sam Milligan for bass and piano. Three works by Pablo Gomez-Estevez will also be performed, "Liminal" for piano and flute; "Too far" for piano and alto voice; and "Como un merengue" for chamber ensemble.
The composition studio is directed by Luther's composer-in-residence, Brooke Joyce. Steve Smith, Luther web programmer analysist, also teaches composition. More information on Luther's composition studio can be found at luther.edu/composition.
