Jazz Band Concert

  • Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2015
  • Time: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
  • Location: Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall

The Luther College Jazz Band will present a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Jazz Band, under the direction of Jon Ailabouni, will perform works by Mary Lou Williams, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Tito Puente and Thad Jones. It will feature two selections to honor the memory of Fred Sturm, a jazz educator, composer, arranger and friend of jazz at Luther, who passed away last year. The performance features intricate big band arrangements from a wide variety of styles and eras, while highlighting the individual voices of the band members through solos and improvisations.

The concert features performances by the Luther College Jazz Quartet, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Oneota Jazz Quartet. These small groups present a different perspective on the jazz tradition and exemplify the many aspects of jazz at Luther.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Band will collaborate on "Smack Dab in the Middle," a rhythm and blues standard written by Charles Calhoun, arranged by Darmon Meader, member of "New York Voices."
