Faculty Artist Series: Music in the Shape of a Pear

Marking the 10th anniversary since its inception as a concert series, Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" will present a concert featuring music composed by graduates of Luther's composition program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features recent solo and chamber works by Jon Bakken, class of 2009; Joseph Carey, class of 2011; Benjamin Cramer, class of 2013; Maxwell Lafontant, class of 2013; Sky Macklay, class of 2010; Ted Moore, class of 2009; Kimberly Osberg, class of 2014; Andrew Prahlow, class of 2010; and Zach Zubow, class of 2006.

Performers include Luther faculty members Du Huang and Xiao Hu, pianists; Michael Chesher, clarinet; Lorie Scott, flute; Tarn Travers, violin; Brad Schultz, organ; and student performers, including members of the Luther College Chamber Orchestra

The concert is the first event of the composition reunion during Luther's Homecoming weekend. Other events include a reception for composition alumni Friday, Oct. 10, a rehearsal and recording session Saturday, Oct. 11, and premieres of new alumni compositions during Sunday morning worship in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

A new work for concert band, composed by Sydney Kjerstad, class of 2013, will be premiered during the Homecoming Concert at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

"Music in the Shape of a Pear" is a semi-annual concert series directed by Brooke Joyce, Luther College's composer-in-residence. Performances include collaborations between Luther faculty, staff, students, local musicians and guest recitalists.
