Faculty Artist Series: Woodwind Faculty Chamber Music Recital

  • Date: Saturday, February 28, 2015
  • Time: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
  • Location: Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music

The woodwind faculty of Luther College will present a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on Luther's campus.

The program, open to the public with no charge for admission, features Luther faculty members Carol Hester, flute and alto flute; Heather Armstrong, oboe and English horn; Michael Chesher, clarinet and bass clarinet; and Helen James, bassoon.

The woodwind faculty will open the program with "Duet for Clarinet in Bb and Bassoon, WoO 27, No. 3" by Ludwig van Beethoven, and follow with a four-movement piece "Fragments," by Robert Muczynski. "Sticks and Stones" by Luther's composer-in-residence, Brooke Joyce, sits third in the program and precedes the three-movement finale piece, "Quartet in C Major for Woodwinds," by Arthur Berger.

"Sticks and Stones" was commissioned by the Luther College Faculty Chamber Ensemble, Talus Trio, and premiered on Sept. 25, 2009, at Luther. Joyce wrote the piece in spring 2009; it opens with a rhythmic transcription of two woodpeckers he heard near his home. The middle section of the piece features the English horn, alto flute and bass clarinet in a forest nocturne. The ending section features music that speeds up and slows down rapidly and unexpectedly.
