"Before coming to Luther, I had no plans of becoming a mathematics major. It wasn't until after I got a chance to experience how devoted the faculty are to helping students succeed, in and out of class. That's when I knew I had made the right decision."—John Evans, '17
There may be no major more versatile than mathematics as preparation for a variety of vocations. Luther mathematics majors have pursued advanced degrees in pure and applied mathematics; the physical, biological, and social sciences; engineering; and professions such as medicine and law. Others are in the work force as accountants, bankers, editors, engineers, human resources personnel, insurance representatives, sales managers, small business owners, software engineers, teachers, and underwriters.
The Luther College Mathematics department is committed to a curriculum that is consistent with the mission of the College. Excellent teaching is our highest priority. We offer our students courses that are relevant to a wide range of majors. We strive to demonstrate the clarity, diversity, and beauty of mathematics as a model for our world.
The Mathematics department is housed in the Olin Building along with the departments of Computer Science and Economics & Business (with majors in Economics, Accounting, and Management).
