Headline of the Week: Digital Media Center – Open House!
This past Tuesday, March 18, LIS hosted an Open House for the New Digital Media Center in the lower level of Preus Library. Well over 100 Luther College community members participated including students, faculty and staff. Students, several of which were first year students, prepared demonstrations of the Center’s capabilities in the context of teaching and learning.
The first lab demo showed a student’s fast draw whiteboard animated video using a technique popularized by Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts (RSA). It was a big hit. Behind, a student was demonstrating converting media for using within the Katie learning management system. To the left another student showed how to edit “green screen” images to set up for mash ups with other backgrounds. On the monitor an advanced art project played that combined digital photography, green screen work, scaling and animation to tell a story. To the right a student demonstrated how to edit digital video, for example to “flip” a classroom. In the control room a student showed how the equipment in the studio can be controlled and monitored. Within the studio people could personally do green screen work. In the studio corner a student was playing the role of professor working with a remote colleague out near the refreshments in videoconference scenario. The students did a fantastic job showing some of the possibilities for leveraging digital media for teaching and learning purposes. Luther College CHIPS, the student newspaper covered the event.
This public “show and tell” was the culmination of work that began in 2012 with a campus wide assessment for digital media, a proposal that was developed in early 2013, negotiations to find the right balance between capability and affordability and a project that largely spanned late summer through J-Term 2014. The investment was approximately $140,000 that came from budget savings from fiscal year 2012-2013 and contributions from the marketing and LIS operational budgets. Approximately half of the investment went into construction and half into equipment.
This was an extraordinary collaboration. Many participated in many of the steps. There were conversations (sometimes multiple) with 19 different departments across campus to gather requirements. Sasha Griffin led the assessment. Diane Gossman and Matt Baumann led the proposal development. The cabinet provided the approval, financial support and encouragement. Eddy Atwell lead moving the shelving and books to make available the space. Dennis Blake, Adam Forsyth and Chris Stuckman put in the networking and storage infrastructure. The facilities team led the space construction and fit-up. Chris Thompson helped us manage the dust and mess during construction. Matt Baumann led the digital media center installation within the constructed space. Diane Gossman managed the overall project. Matt Baumann has hired and trained additional students to provide the support the community will need to explore the possibilities and leverage the tools and techniques.
