Headline of the Week: Tribute to Jean Dickman
Forty-four years, five months of service to Luther College. Today Jean Dickman, Acquisitions Assistant in Preus Library, retires. She joined Luther College prior to Preus Library building coming on-line. She was serving when the library moved from Koren to Preus.
I want to share a couple of thoughts on this special day for Jean.
Jean was very good at her work; an extraordinary steward of Luther’s resources and one who works with the highest attention to detail. This is well known.
Jean also carries with her a great deal of our organizational memory. Her length of service and her relationships and her historical attention to policy and events have made her an important point of reference. As a new person, I very much enjoyed listening to Jean share stories of the past that provide context and inform the future. I am so glad she recently bought a new PC and is establishing an email identity beyond her Norse Mail so when there are questions that only she can answer we can reach out and by so doing stay connected.
In the portion of our building where the Technical Services workspaces and my office are located, Jean was in the middle and not just physically. She was at the center of our community. With treats of every shape and kind near her work area she attracted lots of folks. Her openness and warmth and infectious smile turned those folks into friends and repeat visitors. She achieved in our library something like what is meant with the phrase “…made our house into a home.”
Finally I want to remind Jean that for forty-four years she has been a part of something special, extraordinary. She has been part of a system that has influenced somewhere on the order of 1500 and 2500 18-22 year olds each and every year for all those 44 years. When you think of your service to Luther, think of all the colleagues and friends you have made through your work, many of which attended your reception on Thursday, for sure. But also think broader and know you contributed meaningfully to an organization that influenced thousands and thousands of 18-22 years olds. That is your legacy too.

Notes from LIS Council
LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:
- Digital Media Assessment and Proposal Project
- Sasha joined the meeting to contribute to a conversation and update on the digital media assessment/proposal project. The data from the quantitative assessment phase of the assessment is being finalized and summarized in order to extract key learnings the proposal needs to prioritize and address through time for digital media needs across campus. A first set of concepts was shared on the spaces for digital media work. Paul reported on a conversation with Rob Larson and President Torgerson on some guiding principles and initial scope. The goal is to have a scoped, phased proposal to get into the consideration set for funding for 2013-14 that addresses space, repository, storage and networking infrastructure, equipment and staffing and the accompanying financials.
- LIS Operational Agenda
- Council members will be reporting on LIS operational views (metrics for processes and status of projects) regularly at LIS Council meetings. This week’s reports included the following:
- Library & Archives

- Software Development
- Marcia provided an update on the document imaging/workflow project. A vendor provided demonstrations of the management configuration interface and of the end user experience. There was also discussion on both Luther hosted systems and SaaS vendor hosted support. A special focus was on the integration with Datatel and security infrastructure. Next steps include following up on references with other like colleges, selecting a vendor(s) for the project and developing a workplan and cost proposal to respond to the Cabinet request.
- Progress has been made on the needed password change application for Active Directory. This is also needed to support newly deposited students prior to February. An open source program is being researched.
- The Box Office is researching software options for ticketing. LIS continues to monitor and advocate for cloud support to mitigate the implications of the Christmas at Luther ticketing process.
- The Datatel SQL Migration Project team is scheduling weekly Business Objects reporting workshops with LIS staff available for help. The question was raised as to whether or not there is a way to monitor/measure end-user activity with new tools to help inform ongoing support needs/investment and cutover readiness. Further analysis is being done on licensing costs.
- Spring phonathon is planning to use a Wilson-Bennet automated calling system. Marcia will be the point person from LIS.
- Payroll and Financial Aid annual maintenance work is underway.
- The team is readying Residence for Baker Village room draw scheduled for Feb 1.
- Steve is sending Reason analytics code to Carleton today to be included in general release.
- New Items
- Library Entrance
- Per Dennis from the Facilities Meeting 1/15/13, there are plans to repair the entrance to the library entrance this summer. Concerns were expressed about how we might accommodate a closed entrance. There will be more conversation and planning on this item.
- Energy Visit(s)
- Library and User Services are looking forward to scheduling an “energy visit” much like was done in Main last year. Diane will look into adding it to the monthly library all staff meeting.

- New Katie
- Approximately 20 faculty and staff participated in either the Norse Docs offering or the New Katie Faculty Working Sessions to learn how to migrate courses to New Katie and to exploit new features including Morsle.
- A request was received to help move resources for a set of music classes to New Kate. Staffing options were discussed.
- Program Support Coordinator Search
- The search team has selected a finalist and the process of offer/acceptance is underway.
- First meeting with the group cohort was this past Tuesday. An uncertainty around barcode specifics was uncovered and being worked.
- Miller Wireless
- Adam made a change in channel location and eliminated a few 2.4 Ghz radios this morning. The goal of this change was to decrease interference and errors. Initial testing showed no negative impacts to coverage from the reduction in radios.
