Headline of the Week: Opportunity to Share with the Board of Regents
In July, President Torgerson presented an opportunity for LIS to tell some of their story to the Board of Regents when they come in the fall. We negotiated specific topics over the intervening time. That presentation was this morning (Friday, October 26, 2012).
We decided that it would be great to have a student perspective. I had met Rebecca Dominiczak during recruitment for the LIS Academic Advisory Council – a committee out of the Dean’s Office that provides linkage between LIS and faculty, administration and students. I was looking for a Junior. Becca was a Senior. Being a Senior was a fine academic status for sharing how technology has impacted her Luther journey.
Becca is a first generation student from the Milwaukee, WI area. She is earning a Business Management major and a minor in Music. She works for the Economics and Business department updating their website. She is President of the Tau Delta Gamma sorority, sings in Collegiate Choir, and is captain of the Football Cheerleading squad. She is very involved and needs to stay highly organized in order to juggle all the competition for her time.
She did a great job. She internalized the request from the President, reflected on her journey, calibrated her transformation with others, captured the relationship with information technology from both the “what do you do with the various technologies” perspective as well as the “where does the IT show up in how you experience your time at Luther” perspective and how it has impacted her. She learned a new presentation tool (Prezi – BTW thanks to Jennifer Rian, Innovative Services Librarian, for teaching Becca and I this skill over the last few weeks) and developed a great sequence of visuals and stories to share with the Board. She brought great energy (we are talking a cheerleader!) and delivered a great set of stories to help the Board understand the nature of the 24 by 7, 365 student.
My piece focused on our team and our level of investment. I shared the guiding principles we used during our strategy days to prioritize our 2012-2013 objectives. (They are captured in our LIS Annual Report 2011-12.) I used the Journeys to America project as an example of a way to connect outbound. I helped them understand the critical role our network plays on campus and our connections to the Internet. I had researched MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses – and shared that and some ideas on how they might relate to Luther College. I closed with a model that tries to look at an undergraduate degree as an aggregation and integration of separate parts and discussed how each disaggregated part might or might not be vulnerable to disruption by new (competitive) ventures. I closed asking for encouragement and support for LIS to play an important role in providing differentiation to contribute to Luther’s success.
The Board of Regents is a very friendly crowd. They deeply care about Luther and are committed to its future success. Early feedback was good. I will make an “LIS Only” blog post with the links to the two Prezis.

Notes from LIS Council
LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:
- LIS Operational Agenda
- Council members will be reporting on LIS operational views (metrics for processes and status of projects) regularly at LIS Council meetings. This week’s reports included the following:
- So far in October, external users have made up the largest constituency using the Archives.
- Most transactions have been reference questions, and interactions largely average fewer than 30 minutes per question.
- Nordic, our online joint (Luther and Vesterheim Museum) archives search website, from Sept 21 – Oct 21, had 208 unique visitors, of which 195 were new visitors. Visits averaged about 8 minutes. 30% of traffic is derived from web searches, and 60% from referrals from other sites. Most referrals do come from the find.luther.edu search appliance.
- Network & Systems
- There has been high growth in mobile device registration in the past three years, mostly occurring in IOS and Android platforms. The current distribution is IOS: 71% and Android: 26%.
- Current registrations, by OS, are Mac: 52%; Windows: 47%.
- Adam continues to investigate Towers wireless issues on a case-by-case basis as problems are reported. Around a dozen wireless printer issues have been resolved, which improves service in the vicinity of the printer.
- User Services
- Total work orders created continues to increase on a month-by-month basis.
- The subcategory of General/Other still needs to be teased out more, to gain a clearer sense of topic.
- Work orders related to Audio/Video also are growing this fall.
- Air Server: This program which allows wireless projection from an iOS device (e.g. iPad) to a podium computer has been installed for testing in Hovde, Nursing, Olin 112, and Olin 202.
- Veterans Kiosk: The hardware is ready to be installed and has been delivered to Loyalty.
- Main 113: Initial conversations have begun to redesign Main 113 during summer 2013, in collaboration with the Paideia program.
- Library Quiet Zones: A proposal to create signs noting various active and quiet areas of the library is in progress.
- Sophos: Applications affected by the Sophos bug have been identified and updates to those applications will be pushed to all faculty / staff workstations.
- Aquatic Center: DVR/camera gear has been acquired to test; additional proposals are being obtained.
- Stadium Wiring: Work to wire the stadium for commencement is in progress; conduit has been run and some wire has been pulled.
- CFL A/V: Conversations are occurring to allow connections on the main floor for the A/V cart which is used for recording events, to improve audio wiring for the CFL technicians, and to improve the wireless density of the main hall.
- Training: Katie training workshops have been scheduled to share information regarding the New Katie Version to be implemented Spring 2013.
- Help Desk: 3 new students have been hired and started working with us last week; we are hoping to be back at full staff next week.
- Software: We have resolved the Adobe licensing limits by acquiring additional licenses for Acrobat Pro to relieve the stress from the demand for Adobe CS6 licenses.
- New Items
- LIS General (11/7)
- We discussed ideas for the November 7 LIS General. It was decided we will watch the EDUCAUSE opening session by Clay Shirky.
- Chromebooks for Checkout
- We discussed the possibility of having Chromebooks available for checkout from the Circulation Desk in the library. User Services will take the lead on this and have additional conversations.
- Verizon MiFi’s
- LIS has a Verizon MiFi and other departments on campus are interested in acquiring them as well. Adam will investigate how many more we can add and still have Verizon bill back to individual owners on their credit cards.
- System Outages
- We began discussion of ways in which to improve communication within LIS and with the campus community during system outages. Diane will set a meeting to discuss this in more detail.
- EDUCAUSE Online
- The proposed EDUCAUSE Online Schedule was shared. More information will be shared with LIS and campus community. Luther faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend the sessions.

- Program Support Coordinator Coverage
- Lori Patterson’s last day at Luther was this past Tuesday. Laurel Womeldorf will provide coverage for purchasing and billing. Eddy will run circulation-related reports and René will provide morning supervisory coverage for the Circulation Desk. The LIS Auction will be on hiatus. Diane will handle Lori’s email as appropriate and also cover Lori’s other duties.

- The Cabinet has approved advertising for this position. Search committee makeup and process was discussed.
