Headline of the Week: “…Library is Strongest and Most Trusted Partner…”
This past week I had the opportunity to prepare a writeup for a Luther alumni Distinguished Contribution Award (DSA) for an extraordinary alum, Ann Hill Duin. I will get to read it this evening as part of the DSA presentations after the Jazz Orchestra concert in the Center for Faith and Life (CFL).
Ann is a ’77 graduate. She earned a BA from Luther with majors in Music and English Education. She began her career teaching elementary music and high school English. She and her husband served as short-term missionaries in Japan as part of an American Lutheran Church program from 1979 to 1981. When she returned she headed off to graduate school at the U of MN. She earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. During her graduate work she discovered a passion for emerging technologies and application to higher education.
This began a long career of Ann working at the “intersections” as a change agent. She worked at the intersection of her discipline and information technology. She worked on collaborations at the intersections of various functional areas across the U of MN and at the intersections of the U of MN and other industry and university partners.
Fast forward through a string of successful roles and contributions and last year she served as the Interim Vice President and Chief Information Officer at the U of MN leading over 400 people and managing a $71M budget. Ann has come a long way from her Luther BA in English Education and Music!
Lesson one from interacting with Ann is that opportunities to facilitate change abound at the intersections. You have to bring people together to facilitate innovation and change. This makes sense as most all of the processes of doing higher education cut across the functions and departments.
The second important lesson from Ann is that change requires shared leadership and trust and that must be built on authentic relationships. One must have a passion to make things work. Without bringing to bear the leveraging and ideas and contributions of leadership across the organization, innovative change will be modest.
A third takeaway, and my favorite, was that she repeatedly discovered that the library was her strongest and most trusted partner in her work to help be a catalyst to transform higher education. If a new program was piloted, she would always work to see ongoing leadership could come from the library community at the U of MN. There is a worthy aspirational goal for LIS.
Ann appreciates the transformation that is at hand in higher education. Her ongoing goal is to serve as a catalyst for creating the future of the academy. Her approach is through collaboration, shared leadership and the integration of academic technology.
She recently completed an eBook, entitled Cultivating Change in the Academy: 50+ Stories from the Digital Frontlines. This eBook and companion WordPress site connect faculty and staff in new ways for further innovation in academic technology.

Notes from LIS Council
LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:
- LIS Operational Agenda
- Council members will be reporting on LIS operational views (metrics for processes and status of projects) regularly at LIS Council meetings. This week’s reports included the following:
- Gate counts are up slightly from last year, to about 29,000 in September.
- Reference Help engagements are still trending up and we have yet more capacity to serve students. We’re getting 1.5-2 questions per hour at Research Help. Many questions from Paideia open unit. Middle of the day is still the most traffic.
- We’ve had more instruction sessions. 67 instruction sessions YTD.
- National History Day visits began on October 4 with Decorah Middle School. Jackie and Andi visited St. Ben’s on Monday, October 1, to orient students to the theme, possible topics and research preparation. Our efforts have been gradually building up over several years. Last year was the first year Jackie Wilkie worked with contacts through the AEA, to encourage teachers to make their visit during October or November.
- Consultations between librarians and faculty are probably higher than the numbers show. We need to ensure we are tracking this work. It is an important and critical part of our service and essential for innovation.
- Software Development
- Work continues on reporting and assessing decision-making/reporting tools for Datatel. Jean is working on a second migration of our current Datatel data to ODS. The next possible window for migration to SQL Server version of Datatel is summer 2013.
- Steve is working on the conversion tool for the LIS website. Ryan has met with him as well to plan the manual portion of the transition.
- Lane did some work on the physical server for Webtix. We have the vendor’s software to do a performance test. Testing to see if a physical server is faster than the virtual server. The outcome was inconclusive.
- Veterans website was shown to Tom Murray. It needs content. Content providers are Kathy Ferrie, Kirk Johnson and Sue Drilling. We plan also to talk with the Publications team. The project unveiling is planned for Veterans Day.
- New Items
- Campuswide Assessment for Digital Imaging and Workflow
- At the president’s request, a campus wide assessment for digital imaging and workflow. It should coordinate with the digital repository/multimedia project. Marcia and Rachel will co-lead this project.
- Educause Conference – eSeat
- We discussed possibility of purchasing seat to participate in this remotely.

- We’re down to fine tuning. Everyone in LIS should do a final read through by Wednesday, October 10.
