Headline of the Week: Upcoming National History Day Visits

During the next month, over 130 middle school students from Decorah and schools in the surrounding area will visit the library to learn about research for National History Day. We have had History Day visits in the past (which have typically occurred during J-Term), but we are trying something new this year in a partnership with the History Department (in response to the inclusion of History Day in the TG150 Recommendations).

During their visits on October 20, November 3, and November 10, students will receive a brief introduction on how to search for resources and then have free time to do research on their topics using print and electronic sources, which may also include archival materials. History faculty and students will work with the middle school students during the free research time, and librarians will be available to assist with scan-to-email, saving to thumb drives, and resource questions. A tempuser login will be provided to the students during their visit, giving them access to the lab computers and online resources. This year’s National History Day theme is “ Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History”.

Food for Thought: Taking Better Notes in Zotero

“What I do now is make a standalone note for each thought or piece of evidence. But I also make the note a related item of the source from which I got the idea. You can see in the screenshot below that this standalone note is related to a book.”

Thanks to Bob Puffer for this week’s submission.
