Headline of the Week: LIS 2011-12: A First Look at the Road Ahead

It is that time of year again as we look back at all we in LIS set out to accomplish for the 2010-11 academic year and also spend some time thinking about what the future holds for us in 2011-12. The answers to all these questions have been carefully gathered by LIS and published in our 2010-11 Annual Report, published today. In addition to the full report available on the LIS website, our annual Snapshot is also downloadable if you’re seeking the high level overview of the past year.

2010-11 has been very busy and productive for us and we have excellent momentum carrying us forward into the coming year. Here are a few factoids about LIS in 2010-11:

  • 579,853 – Pageviews on the LIS Website
  • 333,467 – Volumes in Preus Library
  • 234,621 – Visitors to Preus Library
  • 3,610 – Work orders Opened by the Technology Help Desk
  • 1,941 – Research Help Interactions
  • 520 – Research Visits to the Luther Archives
  • 326 – Training sessions for the Luther Community
  • 140Mbps – Internet bandwidth available to the campus
  • 100% – Participation in library instruction from Paideia Instructors in the Fall Open Unit
  • 94% – of Students use KATIE, our learning management system
  • 36% – of Luther’s Workstations are Laptops
  • 26 – Print journal subscriptions converted to electronic
  • 5.2 – Days to fill an Interlibrary Loan Request
  • $0.77 – Cost per database search

LIS has set an ambitious agenda for the 2011-12 academic year. Our current objective list as included in the annual report is republished here. As always, this list is a fluid one. While we can set many of our priorities for the coming year now, we also know that a number of initiatives will emerge over the next twelve months. (And for those curious on how we did on this year’s objectives – the full annual report includes item by item updates.)

Items in bold are the LIS Goals that provide a framework for our objectives. Team names in italics are responsible for coordinating work on each item.

2011-12 Objectives

A focus on our constituents and their work to support the mission of Luther College

  • Expand the framework for information literacy/fluency by identifying and cultivating strategic collaborations. [Library]
  • Develop a plan and timeline for implementation of LIS mobile services. [Software Development / User Services]

Support for students

  • Improve direct communication with students. [Library]
  • Expand the multimedia lab on the Main Floor in Preus Library. [User Services]
  • Research how to provide students training and instruction including methods and content. [User Services]
  • Create an iPad Classroom in Preus Library. [User Services, Library]
  • Develop integration and event synchonization between all katie course sites and NorseApps calendars. [Software Development]

Support for faculty

  • Create video tutorials, laying the foundation for increased multimedia support. [User Services]

Support for administration

  • Draft data security policies and procedures for portable devices. [User Services, Network & Systems]
  • Complete the GoPrint Implementation. [User Services, Network & Systems]
  • Complete update of Records Management Policy with training for staff responsible for administrative records. [Archives]
  • Develop an easy and customized Luther Admissions Online Applications for prospective students [Software Development]
  • Plan for and develop reporting solutions using tools that access SQL Server data from the Datatel system. [Software Development]

Engaging and collaborating with our peers

  • Work with Sustainability to implement energy conscious initiatives such as power consumption efficiencies and replacements for lab printers. [User Services]
  • Continue working with Vesterheim Museum to implement an integrated descriptive catalog utilizing Archon software. [Archives]
  • Support more than 75% of staff in attending off-campus professional development opportunities or conferences. [All]
  • Explore collaborative open source opportunities for enterprise software and services [All]

Depth and breadth in resources

  • Continue to work to migrate a portion of collection development activities to “just-in-time”. [Library]
  • Enhance patron-driven leisure reading & media collections. [Library]
  • Review and respond to circulation/library policy issues that were identified through the building vision planning. [User Services, Library]
  • Plan and start migration of Datatel data and software to SQL server. [Software Development]

Simplicity in product, tool, and service

  • Consider options to maximize storage space in the DEPO. [Library]
  • Deploy lecture capture capabilities campuswide. [User Services]
  • Migrate all appropriate LIS websites to Reason content management system. [User Services, Software Development]
  • Migrate from Track-It! to KBOX for Technology Help Desk, Inventory, and Software. [User Services , Software Development]
  • Plan and begin implementing the move to Windows7 for all Windows faculty, staff, and lab computers. [User Services]
  • Develop a plan to reduce the number of computers in the labs and classrooms by 25%. [User Services]
  • Consider antivirus options for students, faculty, and staff. [User Services, Network & Systems]
  • Develop comprehensive electronic communications plan for the campus covering email and personal web content. [Network & Systems, Software Development]
  • Develop and deploy Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) for the ability to sign on once to gain access to NorseApps and Katie. [Network & Systems, Software Development]
  • Research and develop Google’s calendar application to import, export, and notification to support facilities scheduling. [Network & Systems, Software Development]

Innovation in products, tools, and service

  • Foster a culture of innovation to support and enhance the work of the new Innovative Services Librarian. [Library]
  • Implement an institutional digital repository and begin efforts to collect content. [User Services, Library, Archives]
  • Implement a campus-wide digital image storage and access system. [Archives]
  • Implement desktop virtualization for academic computer labs. [User Services, Network & Systems]
  • Move the LIS Auction from Drupal to eBay. [User Services]
  • Explore the possibility of selling select withdrawn and gift books online. [User Services, Library]
  • Research video conferencing options. [User Services]
  • Develop online archival exhibits. [Archives]
  • Implement QR codes on archival materials to enhance description and provide location information. [Archives]
  • Research the potential of hosting and managing Moodle for area schools. [Software Development]
  • Market the collaborative benefits of Norse Apps to all campus staff and faculty users. [Software Development, User Services]
  • Continue taking steps toward Implementing IPv6 networking at Luther** [Network & Systems]
  • Implement DNSSec for Luther’s DNS [Network & Systems]
  • Create a WPA2 Secured Wireless Network and Educate users on the benefits of using it [Network & Systems, User Services]
  • Expand our VMWare implementation and virtualize more servers [Network & Systems]

Integrated information organization and services

  • Create a plan to renovate the current teaching spaces in Preus Library (Hovde, Curriculum, and ICN) to facilitate improved interactive learning and presentation. [Library, User Services]
  • Evaluate designated space(s) for multimedia production, video recording, presentation, and practice. [User Services, Library]
  • Create a cafe style area in Preus Library for gathering and conversation that includes snacks and beverage vending. [User Services, Library]

Staff excellence

  • Recruitment of Executive Director of Library and Information Services. [All]

Notes from LIS Council

LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:

  • New Items
    • 2011-12 Objectives
      • We reviewed the draft list of LIS Objectives for 2011-12 as gathered by individual teams. We also reviewed broader objectives from the current year to decide which ones to carry over into 2011-12.
    • Orientation Plan for Innovative Services Librarian
      • We reviewed and discussed the orientation and work plan for our Innovative Services Librarian. Diane Gossman will be the immediate supervisor and coordinate her work this fall. The document will be shared to those participating in the orientation plan later this week.
    • Aviary Design tools as a new Norse App?
      • We discussed and reviewed this app that provides some editing/design tools connected to Google Apps. While the beta appears to be free, we’re not sure if there is a cost or how it would compare to other offerings we have currently.
    • Server Room Transfer Switch Maintenance and service shutdown on 6/22
      • We reviewed plans to shut down local servers on Wednesday so that repairs can be made to the generator transfer switch. Network connectivity and some webservers will remain up.

NITLE Opportunities

As a member of NITLE (National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education), Luther has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of developmental and training programs intended for faculty, librarians, and information technologists. Events listed at the link below are currently open for registration by Luther participants. LIS Staff who are interested in participating in an event should speak with Christopher Barth. Faculty who are interested in participating should speak with Lori Stanley. Participation is contingent upon available funding and program acceptance.
