Headline of the Week: Report from Associated Colleges of the Midwest Library/IT Meeting

logo.gifThis past Monday I was on the road again to Chicago for a meeting of library and IT leaders from the 14 colleges of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (Beloit, Carleton, Coe, Colorado, Cornell, Grinnell, Knox, Lake Forest, Lawrence, Luther, Macalester, Monmouth, Ripon, St. Olaf). Luther joined the ACM this past summer. This group has not met regularly, though many other groups within the ACM do, and I would expect from this meeting a new desire for greater communication across information support services (library and IT) among the colleges. Topics on the agenda included:

  • Faculty Career Enhancement (FaCE) Project — This project serves to enhance faculty collaboration within the ACM and provides funding for new research collaboration as well as collaborative events. It is the second phase of a Mellon-funded initiative to enrich faculty cross-campus work. Our conversation centered on assessing how best to connect and promote this initiative, and how best we might be able to involve library and IT partnerships in proposals. Often initiatives have connection points to information service, and we affirmed the importance of awareness among information support folks to be able to maximize these benefits.
  • NITLE — Most ACM schools have long histories with NITLE as it has evolved through MITC (the Midwest Instructional Technology Center) into its current form as a national body. Discussion focused on the strengths and weaknesses of the different models, and discussion of the decisions of some ACM schools to forgo NITLE participation. We also met with Joey King, the new Executive Director of NITLE and Eric Jansson, Director of NITLE Labs to get a picture of priorities for the organization moving forward. They reported NITLE has a renewed focus on the liberal arts and also sees itself moving to bring liberal arts institutions to the table with projects like Internet2 (where NITLE just announced a new partnership).
  • Information Literacy Initiatives — ACM held a grant from the Mellon Foundation from 2000-2006 to promote a variety of information literacy initiatives across ACM campuses. The project was deemed quite successful and we reviewed the work done and brainstormed how to build upon this work consortially for the future. This emerged as a clear opportunity to be explored in more depth.
  • Other Issues — We also had time for general information sharing to get a picture of the issues at other institutions. A quick drive-by of the topics discussed: deployment of new technologies (e.g. Kindles, Flip video cameras), collection development workflows, Moodle deployments, access to bandwidth in rural areas, expanding academic technology support, role of archives, Google Apps deployments, print cost recovery, data warehousing, lecture capture, cross-integration of academic support services, improvements/collaborations in technical service workflows, better resource discovery, copyright and intellectual property, space renovations, and work redesign. Since all of those topics were mentioned first by other schools (I shared last), I take it that the conversations and initiatives underway here are right in line with our colleagues since many of those topics are active here as well.

This group is working to set up a means to be in regular electronic communication, and is discussing a spring meeting to occur in conjunction with EDUCAUSE Midwest and a meeting of the ACM FaCE project campus coordinators. Luther has already been building stronger information-related relationships with several of our ACM partners, and I think we have some good opportunities for greater collaboration moving forward in the future.

LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:

  • ACM Meeting — See the notes from above.
  • Discussions with the Bookshop regarding copyright and the future of on-demand printing.
  • Copyright — The website has reached final draft stage and is ready for outside review.
  • Recruiting — Discussion of the Application Development vacancy as well as pre-planning for the library vacancy.
  • Office Construction — A brief update on where we stand (more in the blog)
  • Drupal Upgrade — lis.luther.edu has moved to Drupal 6
  • Operating System Pilots — LIS is piloting Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

The User Perspective on LIS Services: Martin Klammer

Professor Martin Klammer has been with Luther since 1991. He teaches English and Africana Studies courses and has been the head of that department for since 2004. Klammer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and his graduate degrees from the Lutheran School of Theology as well as the University of Iowa. Before coming to Luther, he spent two years living in Africa where he studied the life and culture. While there, Klammer worked on projects like helping a South African woman write her life story.

Professor Klammer utilizes the many databases that the Library offers. He often uses WorldCat in addition to the MLA International Bibliography, America: History and Life, and ERIC databases in his research. Those databases make his research easier and are a resource he utilizes in class as well. Klammer commented that he teaches and encourages his students to use them.

The databases that are offered at the Library are searchable collections of articles, books and media of specific subjects. The America: History and Life database indexes scholarly journal articles, books, and dissertations in the history of U.S. and Canada from prehistory to the present. ERIC Provides bibliographic information to over 1 million items from educational literature. Finally, the MLA International Bibliography database is the foremost subject index for books and articles, conference papers, and dissertations published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics from 1963 to present.

In order to assess information service at Luther, Library and Information Services participates in the Merged Information Services Organization Survey administered by Bryn Mawr College. Luther has administered the survey twice in 2007 and 2009 to all faculty, staff, and a random sample of students.

Each week, we profile a datapoint from the survey that illustrates how the Luther community currently uses LIS services.


NITLE Opportunities

As a member of NITLE (National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education), Luther has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of developmental and training programs intended for faculty, librarians, and information technologists. Events listed at the link below are currently open for registration by Luther participants. LIS Staff who are interested in participating in an event should speak with Christopher Barth. Faculty who are interested in participating should speak with Lori Stanley. Participation is contingent upon available funding and program acceptance.

  • From the Executive Director
    • Dr. Joey King shares his thoughts on NITLE’s new partnership with Internet2, looking forward to a time when advanced networking will be ubiquitous.
  • NITLE enters partnership with Internet2
    • NITLE and Internet2 have signed a letter of agreement for reciprocal membership. The agreement will enable the two organizations to work together to explore and raise awareness of advanced networking applications for teaching and learning, libraries, performing arts, language instruction, health science, and other areas.
    • Joint project work is scheduled to begin in January 2010. NITLE and Internet2 will work together to identify test cases for applying advanced networking within liberal arts contexts, with an initial focus on the arts and humanities and opportunities for inter-campus teaching.

  • NITLE Summit and Camp
    • Planning for the 2010 NITLE Summit is underway. Campus leaders from across the NITLE Network will gather in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 25 – 26. The Summit offers a rich opportunity for high-level networking and collaboration between small, liberal arts colleges. Conference planners for the leadership gathering are developing three tracks focused on CIOs, instructional technology, and the library. Conference planners include:
      • Pam McQuesten, VP Information Resources & Chief Information Officer, Occidental College
      • Chip German, VP Information Technology, Millersville University of Pennsylvania
      • Michael Spalti, Associate University Librarian, Willamette University
      • Joe Murphy, Director of Information Resources, Kenyon College

      • Scott Hamlin, Director of Technology for Research and Instruction, Wheaton College
    • Leadership-level discussion at the Summit will shape the agenda at NITLE Camp 2010 (June 21 – 25, DePauw University). Camp focuses on front-line, on-the-ground implementation of technology for the liberal arts.

Internet Resource of the Week: The Complete Guide to Google Wave

With the ongoing rollout of Google Wave, Google’s new paradigm for electronic communication, a third-party ecosystem of support is now beginning to crop up, including this site which offers good overview and deeper analysis of Google’s new product, how to use it, and what impact it may have going forward. Google Wave combines email, instant messaging, and wikis to create a new collaborative, real-time workspace. As with products that transcend traditional marketspaces, Google Wave has a road to travel to mainstream adoption given that fully using it requires thinking about work in a new way. Tools such as this website (and book) go a long way to providing some orientation points to help users jump in and swim.
