Headline of the Week: Internet Trends - Which of Them Are Important to Us and If So, When?
Since 1995, Mary Meeker, a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has been giving an annual presentation on Internet Trends. It is fascinating material and great fodder for conversation, speculation and imagination.

This Week in LIS - 14 August 2015

Headline of the Week: Embracing the Cloud with Confidence
The word “cloud” juxtaposed with “confidence” raises important questions for us to consider. Juxtaposing “cloud” with “risk” or “cloud” with “cost” lead to more detailed and no less vexing questions. Does a cloud based solution increase or decrease risk? Does a cloud solution cost more or less? Like most challenging questions the answer is most likely, it depends.

This Week in LIS - 17 July 2015

Headline of the Week:  Thank You for Enhancing Student Learning through Information Literacy and Technology
This week the faculty workshop “
Enhancing Student Learning through Information Literacy and Technology,” co-sponsored by LIS and the Dean’s office, was held. In check-ins with both the Dean and the President yesterday I commented how this workshop is one of my favorite LIS events of the year.

This Week in LIS - 10 July 2015

Headline of the Week:  The Product Manager Role in Higher Ed IT
More and more information technology solutions are being delivered in the “cloud.” The overloaded term, cloud computing, can mean many things to many people but generally it means you don’t deploy a physical server with an operating system in your data center and install application software on the path to implementing an information technology solution.

A question was asked during the Cabinet member’s portion of an interview for an LIS leadership job, “What impact will the Internet have on the prices of serials and databases? When will these prices stop going up year after year?”

This Week in LIS - 26 June 2015

Headline of the Week:  Two Stories from CLAC - One About Liberal Arts and Another from Apple
Last week Diane Gossman and I attended the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC) Annual Conference. This year it was expertly hosted by Lafayette College in Easton, PA. CLAC is made up of 70 top liberal arts colleges from across the country and the focus of the CLAC organization is applying information technology to serve the liberal arts educational mission.

This Week in LIS - 12 June 2015

Headline of the Week: Technology with a Long Life
Frequently we enjoy (or are confounded by) technology driven change that exacerbates what already seem like short product lifecycles. This has led to the term “disposable culture” - one sustainability efforts are looking to counter. This week I enjoyed a “product” that is both highly technical and has enjoyed a long life.

This Week in LIS - 5 June 2015

Headline of the Week: Why Librarians in the Classroom?
The academic year is over. It is time to look back to take stock of accomplishments or areas of growth and plan for the next cycle. In light of this, I would like to take this opportunity to share some thoughts on the value of having librarians -- with or without faculty status --  involved in the teaching that takes place in our institution.
