Headline of the Week: Computer Science, Meet Humanities: in New Majors, Opposites Attract
Yesterday’s Chronicle
article on hybrid majors that include both computer science and humanities was surprising to me because it was positioned as “news.” Perhaps the newsworthiness is that the article described a new program at Stanford. This sort of thing where a student studies in one discipline and also in computer science is not a new idea. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged at a liberal arts college like Luther College.

Headline of the Week:  First Aid Class for Mental Health
This past week 15 folks from LIS (and several others from around campus) attended a class taught by Stu
Johnston to learn how to help someone developing a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis. The training was designed to help us learn to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in others such as our students or colleagues.

Headline of the Week:  Welcome to Holly White and Popular and Smart: Just-for-fun Reading on a College Campus
Today I have two welcomes. First I invite you to join me in welcoming Holly White to the LIS team. She joins us from Muskingum University in Ohio as our new Instructional Technology Librarian. She articulates the extraordinary life-long value that accrues from leisure reading and shares a fun J-Term program to encourage our students (and others!) to engage.

Headline of the Week:  Human and Machine Collaboration - Michael Cameron and His International Touring Organ
I very much enjoyed listening to an
NPR interview with organist and composer Cameron Carpenter on a drive last weekend to Chatfield to pick up the bounty from a successful deer hunting season. The subject of the conversation was Carpenter’s music and his digital International Touring Organ which he designed in collaboration with Marshall and Ogletree, digital organ builders in Needham, Mass.

Headline of the Week: Learning to Learn, Neuroergonomics, Welcome! Welcome!
I am fascinated by the process of learning. This comes honestly from years and years spent in a field (Information Technology) that has changed so rapidly over all the years I’ve been a part of it - and trying to keep up. Some argue the rate of IT change is increasing.

This Week in LIS - 20 November 2015

Headline of the Week: Security, The Internet of Things, Convenience
One of the projects that we have been working on is isolating the networks associated with various classes of devices/things on our network. We want to isolate them from possible attacks coming from outside our firewalls and we would like to isolate them to an appropriate degree within our firewall so only those people and systems with a need have access.

Headline of the Week: The Glass Cage: Automation and Us
Special thanks to recent guest “Headliners.” Your excellent contributions provided time to finish Nicholas Carr’s latest book
The Glass Cage: Automation and Us. Like his “Shallows” book where he explores some of the knock-on systematic consequences associated with humans and their nature when using mobile devices and interacting through screens, in this book he explores the knock-on consequences of the growing trend towards usage of automation and robotic systems.
