Headline of the Week:  Thank You for Enhancing Student Learning through Information Literacy and Technology
This week the faculty workshop “
Enhancing Student Learning through Information Literacy and Technology,” co-sponsored by LIS and the Dean’s office, was held. In check-ins with both the Dean and the President yesterday I commented how this workshop is one of my favorite LIS events of the year.

Headline of the Week:  The Product Manager Role in Higher Ed IT
More and more information technology solutions are being delivered in the “cloud.” The overloaded term, cloud computing, can mean many things to many people but generally it means you don’t deploy a physical server with an operating system in your data center and install application software on the path to implementing an information technology solution.

Headline of the Week:  The Conundrum with Academic Serials and Electronic Databases Costs
A question was asked during the Cabinet member’s portion of an interview for an LIS leadership job, “What impact will the Internet have on the prices of serials and databases? When will these prices stop going up year after year?”

Headline of the Week: Technology with a Long Life
Frequently we enjoy (or are confounded by) technology driven change that exacerbates what already seem like short product lifecycles. This has led to the term “disposable culture” - one sustainability efforts are looking to counter. This week I enjoyed a “product” that is both highly technical and has enjoyed a long life.

Headline of the Week: Why Librarians in the Classroom?
The academic year is over. It is time to look back to take stock of accomplishments or areas of growth and plan for the next cycle. In light of this, I would like to take this opportunity to share some thoughts on the value of having librarians -- with or without faculty status --  involved in the teaching that takes place in our institution.

Headline of the Week: Content Is A Knowledge Enabler - Knowledge Requires a Knower’s Engagement
Collaborative colleague and faithful “Headline” commenter, Tim Schweizer, put me onto an interesting and provocative article this week from FastCompany magazine. It starts with describing how higher education operates at an abstracted, over simplified level and then talks about how the future will likely continue on an “unbundling” vector.

Headline of the Week: Tribute to John Goodin and Lessons from Faculty Retiree Gala
Last evening thirteen retiring faculty members were honored at a wonderful dinner event in Peace Dining Room. For each a personally selected and trusted colleague offered a short tribute which was then followed by a response from the retiree. The event began with social time beginning at 5:30pm, transitioned to dinner around 6:00pm and with Dean Kraus keeping the program moving spritely along we wrapped up well after 10:00pm.

Headline of the Week: Developing “Know How” in a Changing World
Due to a job change of the elected treasurer, I am filling in as treasurer for the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC) for the next couple years. It turns out that this organization is in a great financial position and the leadership team is working on programs and offerings to further help and support the 70 members taking on the challenges of information technology.

Headline of the Week:  Physical Ownership and Copyrighted Firmware
Last weekend the tractor got fired up after sitting in the shed all winter. A long Sunday afternoon was filled with mowing and moving compost and pushing around newly fallen logs and loading sticks into piles and running the brush hog. A sunburnt forehead testified to how much fun in the sun was had!
