Notes from LIS Council - 7/30/14

  • New Items
    • Card access doors in Regents Center
      • We discussed the possibility for a project to support card access to 5 doors in Regents Center. We discussed need to get a decision on who would have access to those doors. Barring other input we will implement access for students and current faculty and staff; all others will have to go through the front doors. Marcia get an update from Facilities Services.
    • Main Building Update
      • A committee has been formed to discuss possible renovations to main. Diane Gossman is on the committee. The team is encouraged to think about and enumerate key questions we should consider to form our input into the planning. We will discuss further at next LIS Council including timing of broader team conversations. Examples include thoughts on data center and LIS main offices.
    • Additional MiFi
      • Adam will order another one  We have observed contention for the one we have and believe we will get good utility and costs will be offset by savings from hotel wifi costs.
    • Norse Key Password Length
      • To increase security, we will develop communication and implementation plans to increase the minimum length of passwords to 10 characters.
  • Returning Items
    • EPIC Files/Data Updates
      • We discussed the need for further conversations with Karen Martin-Schramm to work through details for handling EPIC program data updates and physical files. Marcia will lead the conversation on the data update topic and Sasha will lead the discussion on the physical files.
    • Lab Printers
      • Half of the new printers were installed last week and the other half are being installed today. They will print simplex for now and prior to start of fall semester new drivers will be installed to take advantage of their duplex printing capability. A couple of the HP printers will be outfitted with duplex paper handling capability.
    • LIS Work Study Student Early Arrivals
      • A compromise was reached staging student worker’s arrival on campus to support move in and training. Training plans will be changed to accommodate staged arrival. Some students will come earlier enough for training to support move in.
    • LIS Plans for Photos for Web Site
      • Patty is arranging times with Visual Media.There will be one morning slot and one afternoon slot. Look for further information from Patty. Ryan will lead getting the pictures onto the site.
    • SQL Migration Project Update
      • There were two breakthroughs this week. Business Objects 4.0 is now live and Jean has restored the ability to copy to create test environments. Ben can continue to explore making a concurrent copy of the database to support reporting.
    • AD project update/Next Step
      • We will move to 10 character passwords with this change.  Marcia will work with Chris on communication and webpage updates.
    • Katie Support Team Mission Update
      • The team is meeting Thursday.
    • Olson Wireless Update
      • All of the wireless access points are installed. A new power over ethernet (POE) capable switch has arrived and need needs to be configured and installed. There is some coordinating changes to be made with the  towers wireless configuration as well.
    • Jensen Wireless Update
      • Conduit work is expected to begin next week.
    • Annual Report/Next Step
      • Matt Hughes is working up a new format. New target is August.
    • Update on Furniture/Shelving Give Away
      • A home has been found for the shelving and conversation continues on the furniture with a library that experienced flooding and is recovering.
