H drive Changes Coming

For improved data security, on Thursday, December 26, 2013, LIS is limiting off-campus access to information on H drives -- space for storing electronic files on Luther’s servers.

On Thursday, December 26, 2013, direct off-campus access to student H drives will be turned off.

In addition, on Thursday, December 26, 2013, web page hosting will be turned off on student and staff H drives. This means web pages and other content hosted from the public_html folder of your H drive will be unavailable through a web browser. The public_html directory will remain on your H drive, so you will still have access to your content.

Publications Office staff are currently working to transition faculty to web pages on the main Luther web site. Eventually, web page hosting will be turned off for faculty H drives as well.

Background

In early 2013, LIS engaged an IT security firm to determine areas of potential weakness in our IT infrastructure. This firm’s testing revealed several areas of improvement for data security involving our campus file servers. These servers house a variety of critical data for the campus community, so in order to protect this important information, LIS will eliminate direct off-campus access to these servers, as well as the ability to access these servers from a web browser.

Examination of usage on student, faculty, and staff H drives indicated that these services are no longer needed.

Impact

Students (as well as faculty and staff) can continue to access their files from off-campus locations using Luther’s VPN. Instructions for using the VPN can be found at http://www.luther.edu/helpdesk/vpn/.

There are many free web services for those that wish to make personal web pages.
