Notes from LIS Council - 9/18/13

LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:

  • LIS Operational Agenda
    • Library
      • Andi shared information about checkouts that occurred during August. We also looked at information about utilization of our eBook collections. Utilization information on our collections is key to guiding our investments in materials and decisions on media. We also looked at year to year library instruction statistics.
    • Software Development
      • Regarding the Alumni/Development ImageNow project, Ricoh is returning the first batch of 80 boxes of documents to the library archives cage and picking up the next batch. Work is underway to connect Colleague to ImageNow documents. There are dependencies on some network infrastructure and client workstation work in addition to the integration between Colleague and ImageNow and the configuration of the new workflow.
  • New Items
    • Library Extended Hours
      • A pilot extending the library hours is beginning. The library will now close on Fridays at 9pm instead of 7:30pm starting 9/20. Beginning Sunday, 9/29 the main floor of the library building will stay open for study space until 1am. Library services will continue to end at midnight. After some initial experience there will be broader communication. This pilot is in collaboration with Campus Safety and Security and is a response to student requests for extended library hours.
  • Returning Items
    • Network Usage Fall Memo
      • This memo informs/reminds community members about Luther’s network usage policies and user responsibilities. This memo is sent out each fall early in the semester. The memo has been reviewed and edited and has been sent to Publications for campus community distribution.
    • Upcoming LISAAC Meeting
      • The LIS Academic Advisory Council will meet 10/3 at 4pm in Hovde. We discussed a number of agenda candidate topics. If you have topics for consideration please send them to Patty Livingood and Paul Mattson.  
    • Digital Media Center Construction Update
      • Much has been done including walls and doors. Wiring, ceiling, lights, paint, trim, etc. remain to be completed. Some equipment has been ordered and the the studio lighting system has arrived. The fiber uplink to the network rack for the room has been installed. Matt B. and Diane G. and Paul have been interviewed for a Chips article. The media team is anxious to occupy the space and begin installing equipment. The lab space will be available shortly after construction is complete and the target for the studio availability is Spring semester.
