Clumsily, we navigate our way about the poles beneath our classroom, the yoga studio at Ak’bol retreat of Ambergris Caye. An octopus, surrounded by debris casts an eye toward us indifferent to our attempts to get a better look at it.
For many in the class, this is an exciting first attempt at snorkels, masks, and fins. For the rest of our stay in Belize, we will be stationed at San Pedro to observe the coral reef and the fish. Today, we navigate the seagrass and look for horse-eye jack, sergeant major, lionfish, and French angelfish. Tomorrow, we will finally reach the reef and begin recording dozens of marine organisms.
