We're in London! We met at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Monday night to check in and prepare for our flight to Heathrow International Airport, which left at 10:00 p.m. Before the flight, we spent some time as a class going over the course syllabus and acquainting ourselves with British money. The seven and a half hours of the flight were used for reading, watching movies, excited conversation, and catching what sleep we could before arriving safely at Heathrow at noon.
After going through customs and collecting our luggage, we had our first experience with traveling on the Underground! Luckily, there weren't too many people, and we were able to ride a single line from the airport. After that, we only needed to walk a few blocks from the station to the hostel where we will be staying for the first several days of our trip.
When we arrived at the hostel, we took a few moments to settle in and unpack. A couple of my classmates explored the neighborhood, and the remainder of us rested after a long day of travel. For dinner, we ate some incredible food at an Irish pub, and then we all saw The Play That Goes Wrong at the Duchess Theatre. It was hilarious, and although we were all excited to see the first play of the class, we were all very happy to be able to go back to the hostel and get a good night's rest.
We will spend the next seven days in London, with class each morning and a performance in either the afternoon or the evening. In our spare time, we're all planning to explore the museums, parks, and restaurants in the area, as well as getting a feel for the city itself. Although London is very different from Decorah, we've all adjusted quickly to getting around, and the more time we spend here, the more exciting it is to be able to share in the energy and the vibrancy that the city has to offer. Although a week feels like forever, we know it'll go by all too quickly. Before our time is up, though, we're ready to go out and explore!
