Peace House: Complete

To begin Day 15 in Cambodia, we piled onto the bus and headed to the Angkor Hospital for Children here in Siem Reap. We watched an informational video about this non-profit pediatric teaching hospital and those of us who are especially interested in the health care field were invited to take a short tour! This hospital provides quality health care to children in need at no cost to the families. During this time, those of us who were not on the tour went shopping for necessary items for the family receiving the Peace House. Some of our purchases included cooking materials, bedding, and a few personal gifts.

After a relaxing class and a brief break for lunch, we headed back to the construction site to see the progress of the house. As we arrived, the final touches were being added. With the help of translators, we had nice discussions with the family members and those from the community who were there for support. They found our names and our attempts at speaking Khmer names and words very amusing! Finally, we all joined together to begin the blessing of the house.

After ceremoniously circling the house three times, we all made our way inside for the blessing. Together with the monks, family, and community members, we listened to various chants and prayers. The monks explained the conditions linked to receiving this special house. To end the ceremony we presented the gifts to the incredibly grateful familiy and took many pictures! As it turns out, monks like to post selfies on Facebook too! After this heart warming experience, we made our way back to the hotel and had a free night to do what we pleased.
