Meet Your Bloggers!

Hello friends and family! We are elated to begin our travels to South Africa this January and we so excited to share the stories of our adventures with you from across the Atlantic! We will be representing our class throughout the month of January. This post is our way of introducing ourselves to you, our lovely readers. We hope you enjoy!

Kylie Hanschman

Hi! My name is Kylie and I am a sophomore at Luther College. I am studying international studies and spanish. I am involved in a variety of activities around campus including, Cathedral Choir, Dance Team, SPIN Theatre, Phonathon, PALS, Hola/Enlaces Spanish Club and Alpha Phi Omega (service fraternity). I also work as a Writing Tutor in the Writing Center and help teach English/Spanish classes in Postville, Iowa to Hispanic immigrants. I am extremely passionate about learning about the world and I seek to find ways to reach out into my community. I enjoy traveling and experiencing first hand other cultures. I have never been to South Africa so I am extremely excited to get to experience one of the world’s most beautiful countries with a great group of people!

Madeline Geier

Hello! As the heading above indicates, I’m Madeline. Like Kylie, I’m also a sophomore here at Luther. I’m a theatre major with a writing minor and I am greatly enjoying my classes. Here on campus, I keep myself busy with theatre productions, serving as a Phonathon co-chair, Luther Philanthropy Council, and SPIN Theatre. I’m also an RA in Brandt Hall and feel so lucky to have such wonderful women as residents on First West. In addition, I work as a Writing Consultant in the Writing Center. I’ve always loved traveling and feel that there’s much we learn from being in a place that cannot be gained by studying it alone. As a theatre geek, writer, and an avid reader since childhood, this course sounded like it would be an incredible experience and opportunity to learn about a place and its culture through their stories. I’ve found that no matter where I’ve gone, I can still relate and connect with others and I am excited to take this perspective to South Africa with my wonderful classmates.

Overall, we are both looking forward to broadening our global perspective and gaining a deeper appreciation for a place that has a very different culture. Of course, it helps that we will be escaping the tundra of Decorah to go to the summer beaches of South Africa! We are also looking forward to connecting with some Luther alum that live over there. We know we will be in good hands with our dynamic-duo of incredible course leaders, Martin Klammer and Nancy Barry. Martin has been to South Africa more than twenty times in his lifetime and is looking forward to sharing his “second home” with us.

Be sure to check back to keep updated on all of our adventures starting on January 5th, 2015. We can’t wait to share our stories and pictures with you! Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Kylie Hanschman and Madeline Geier
