I was up early to check out snomageddon and to get a jump on some grading. Despite the best of intentions, I was seduced into checking my Facebook feed. A friend whose kids go to the Pine Island, MN school district had shared a post of a tweet from

Headline of the Week: Truth and Social Justice
The extended Luther community is a wonderful thing of which to be a part. One gets to interact with new students every year. One gets to engage with extraordinary faculty and staff. I also get to enjoy the ideas and questions from many other Luther graduates.

Headline of the Week:  Understanding Mental Health Through Speech and Writing Analysis
It was just one year ago that a number of folks from our team attended a class on Mental Health First Aid taught by Stu Johnson. One of the things we learned in that class is that demand for mental health services by our students continues to grow as students in greater numbers come to college with issues.

Headline of the Week:  Automation Implications: An Elephant in the Room
The break between Christmas and New Year’s was fantastic. It was full of family and friends and outings and relaxing. For me relaxing includes reading and/or studying something new. I am grateful for this year’s alignment of dates, holidays and break. Bring on a new year!

Headline of the Week: Thank You! Thank You! Workstation Encryption and Migration to PaperCut Complete!
We are enjoying an extended Thanksgiving celebration! Last week we recognized faculty, staff and ITS teammates for enabling and going live on 2-Step Verification for Norse Apps accounts. Today we continue the thank you's to faculty and staff and ITS teammates who contributed to completing encryption of the installed (backlog) inventory of workstations.

Headline of the Week:  Thank You! Thank You! 2-Step Verification for Faculty and Staff is Live!
Thank you to all the members of faculty and staff that “stepped up” to enabling 2-Step Verification for their Norse Apps accounts in the last two weeks. I know this makes your lives, on occasion, somewhat less convenient when prompted to provide a second step or “factor” when you log in to your email but I also am confident that the risk of successful phishing by nefarious actors has been reduced.

Headline of the Week:  Semantic Scholar for Neuroscience and Computer Science -  A Google Scholar Alternative
The new cross disciplinary majors of Data Science and Neuroscience represent exciting opportunity for students and faculty. It was further encouraging to discover, first through a TechCruch article and then through an article in Nature that there is an interesting new (and free) offering called Semantic Scholar.
