Headline of the Week: Google Glass in Teaching and Learning
I enjoy getting the “The Week in Geek” newsletter from Boston College colleague John Gallaugher. The elements it includes are at the intersection of technology and strategy. Last week he included a piece on innovative uses for Google Glass in the health care setting.
An interesting use case suggested a possible application in collaborative teaching and learning. At the University to California, Irvine, residents wearing Google Glass stream live videos to experienced mentors so all can see the surgical field of view. In another voice commands enable pulling up MRI scans to guide a surgical procedure while freeing the hands of the surgeon.
I wonder what other scenarios exist where it would be valuable for students and instructors to see the same thing. Learning students could get guidance from a lab instructor who could see the same thing the student in seeing in a small isolated field of view. In a complementary fashion imagine a lab instructor demonstrating a procedure that is very difficult for the students to see. Google Glasses provide a way for all to see what the lab instructor is doing.
Google Glass remains in beta. A pair costs $1500. However, if there are breakthrough ideas to improve teaching and learning, they are not so expensive at this point that one couldn’t experiment. Ideas anyone?
