Headline of the Week: No Class Time Is Just the Beginning of What Is Missing

Many have been following the developments of MOOCs (massive open online courses) and the firms that provide the platform to offer them (eg. Coursera, Udacity). The idea has us thinking about the course effectiveness, the business models of the firms that are being built to offer them and how students will leverage them with regard to the issue of college credit.

The University of Wisconsin has announced that it will offer a program called the UW Flexible Option. The idea is to offer multiple, competency-based bachelor’s degrees starting in 2013. This means students may do the learning leveraging any learning resources and structures they choose and then they can take competency exams designed by UW professors and when they have passed enough they have earned their degree.

It seems this would target adult and highly motivated learners. Through competency exams students get credit for what they know and have learned either on jobs or through any form of study.

This represents a big step and an interesting experiment in unbundling the traditional campus classroom based degree.

What are the implications and consequences of such a program?

Notes from LIS Council

LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:

  • LIS Operational Agenda
    • Council members will be reporting on LIS operational views (metrics for processes and status of projects) regularly at LIS Council meetings.
    • No reports this week. Next week Software Development and the Library will present.
  • New Items
    • LIS Summer Faculty Workshop-Information Literacy+Technology
      • A proposed date was shared, June 3-6, 2013. This time was selected to better accommodate faculty schedules and avoid conflicting with other events (e.g. ROAD (Registration, Orientation and Advising Day) or other faculty workshops.) The Dean will be urging new tenure track faculty members to participate in the workshop as part of their onboarding to Luther in their early years and we hope the date selected and that encouragement will increase participation. Those that have attended have shared that coming to understand the breadth and depth of LIS services offered was very useful.
    • ROAD Preparation / Training
      • Admissions has identified some scenarios they would like the Help Desk be prepared to handle for prospective students. Diane referenced the KATIE information for students that is part of the Deposited Student Guidebook. A meeting has been calendared to discuss the request.
    • Survey Requests
      • Four surveys have been delivered from Jon Christy for our review. They largely focus on Library and User Services with some Network & Systems information. Diane, Ryan and Adam will do the initial review.
  • Returning Items
    • LIS Communications
      • Ryan and Diane shared proposed changes to the LIS Standard Internal Communication Channels section of the LIS Communications Policy which focuses on the LIS Blog. These changes are prompted by the move of the LIS website from Drupal to Reason. We will be sharing this within LIS for feedback prior to next month’s LIS General.
    • IT Risk Management
      • We discussed an approach to address risks identified by the Audit/Penetration Test which was conducted in January.
    • LIS Website Migration to Reason
      • Rob Larson has made available three students who have been trained and are at work moving pages from the LIS website to Reason.
