Headline of the Week: What Shall We Create?

This week has been fantastic for getting to know some of the members of the LIS team; this week I have enjoyed 17 one on one conversations spanning 15 hours or so. I very much appreciate the time folks have been willing to spend sharing their stories with me. It has been fun to find the shared experiences and shared vocabulary. I am confident this is a good way to join a new community and look forward to getting to chat with the rest of the team over the next couple weeks.

Kevin Kelly is the co-founder of Wired Magazine. Like Erik Brynjolfsson, he too speaks of change driven in part by technology and in particular information technology. He also postulates that one of the most critical skills for career success going into the future is the ability to learn new things. ( I think this is applicable to us in LIS as well as to the students, faculty, and staff that we serve.

It is interesting to think about how LIS can contribute to our students’ ability to learn new things. To that end consider John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid’s Social Life of Information, where they speak of the big semantic gap between “knowing that” about something and “knowing how” to do something. They speak about the value and essentialness of being able to practice to get to “know how.” What might it mean to “practice” the art of learning the new thing? R. David Lankes in the The Atlas of New Librarianship talks also that the mission of librarians is to enable learning. If the ability to learn new things is an important learning, how might the library contribute? What is would be different and what would be the same for that sort of librarianship? Finally consider Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline – The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization and try to imagine how to find alignment with LIS motivations, student motivations and faculty/staff motivations to continue to be a successful learning enabler in the future they imagine. Senge says we are most motivated when we are able to create something that we highly value. How can we find that intersection between what we personally value and our work so we can tap into our best energies?

LIS Council is the leadership team within LIS. Among the topics discussed this past week were:

  • New Items
    • LIS Conferences 2012
      • We reviewed conferences valuable for Paul to attend over the next 12 months.
    • IBM Academic Initiative
      • Paul shared information about the IBM Academic Initiative which is free for instructors and students for non-production use of some IBM Software. LIS will be researching this further as opportunity presents itself.
    • Olin 301
      • This fall the Olin Round Table Room (301) will be used as a classroom space for Soc-301 Research Methodology in addition to being used for training and instruction.
    • Video Interview(s)
      • A student in a media course interviewed Andi, who led the J-Term Library Internship program, and some of the student interns involved in the program.
    • Wireless Network
      • We discussed how to maintain the integrity of our wireless network as wireless becomes more pervasive in products that are brought to campus.
    • Research Practices Survey
      • We reviewed the draft of customizable questions for the HEDS survey that will be administered this spring to seniors who took this survey as first-year students. The survey opens April 2nd.
    • Metronet
      • Paul attended his first Metronet meeting yesterday in which he met the team, discussed the need for goals of each of the main parties to be identified to further inform the network design.

NITLE Opportunities

As a member of NITLE (National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education), Luther has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of developmental and training programs intended for faculty, librarians, and information technologists. Events listed at the links below are currently open for registration by Luther participants. LIS Staff who are interested in participating in an event should speak with Diane Gossman. Faculty who are interested in participating should speak with Lori Stanley. Participation is contingent upon available funding and program acceptance.

Food for Thought: Take the Hunger Games Read-Alike Challenge

Don’t feel like you have a lot of time for “leisure reading”? The Hunger Games read-alike books (from the Curriculum Library) on display at the Research Help Desk are written to be fast-paced, engaging reads that don’t take long to get through. Their check-out time period is actually only 1 day.

So, we invite you to take a challenge. Reclaim what it means to read for fun. Check out one of these books and give it the 24 hour test. Was it a good enough read that you couldn’t put it down? Or did you abandon ship 25 pages in?

Return the book to Circulation and then give us your review (thumbs up/down and why, book title, and your name) via a post-it and you’ll be entered to win a $20 gift certificate to the Luther Book Shop where you can buy your own next great read.

Drawing to be held on Tuesday, April 10th. Open to all Luther students, faculty, and staff. Winner will be notified via their Luther email account.
