Headline of the Week: LIS Service Points Task Force Reforming

Last spring, a number of LIS folk spent time exploring and asking the big questions regarding our primary LIS service points on the main floor of Preus Library – Circulation, Reference, and Help Desk. As an integrated library and technology organization, we wanted to think about how these traditional service points represent LIS as an organization, and understand how they do and can interact one another to further the work and mission of LIS and Luther. The result of this work was a vision and framework for service points in LIS, excerpted below:

Primary Goals

  • To enhance the user experience at LIS service points
  • To encourage broad thinking about service with LIS and among LIS staff providing service
  • To broaden the skills of professional staff through cross-training and collaboration
  • To design and create spaces that better support service and collaboration

Vision for Relationship Between Service Points
Regarding primary LIS service points, we will pursue:

  • a physically co-located suite of service points on the main entrance floor to Preus Library
  • greater understanding and knowledge of service across individual service points
  • an evolutive and iterative seedbed to test, try, and develop innovative service models
  • inclusion of the college’s Writing Center adjacent to the co-located service point

Vision for Service Point Staffing
Regarding staffing our LIS service points, we will pursue:

  • Greater cross-training and awareness of LIS services across all staff (including student staff)
  • More effective use of student employees
  • Creation of a central hub for LIS staff to collaborate

Vision for a Learning Studio
Regarding collaborative work space on the main floor of Preus Library, we will pursue:

  • Flexible, multi-purpose space intended for small group collaborative work
  • Integrated technology that is also flexible in purpose and use
  • Open space that uses furniture to appropriately define and divide space
  • As few physical walls and barriers as required
  • Individual office space for all LIS staff
  • Space intended specifically for LIS staff collaboration

This spring, we will reconvene our task force to brainstorm and recommend specific actions to put this vision to work. Once these steps are identified we can work to plan for resources to enact the vision as our budget and other resources allow. As always, the work of the task force will rely upon the input and thought of all of LIS and many other campus constituents who use our service points. NITLE Opportunities

As a member of NITLE (National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education), Luther has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of developmental and training programs intended for faculty, librarians, and information technologists. Events listed at the link below are currently open for registration by Luther participants. LIS Staff who are interested in participating in an event should speak with Christopher Barth. Faculty who are interested in participating should speak with Lori Stanley. Participation is contingent upon available funding and program acceptance.

Notable Internet Resource of the Week: 2itch

This week’s installment is a web app of likely interest to college students in particular, but really any of us might have a hankering for Twinkies at 3:00 am. While you might know how to commandeer your quarry in your own home town, what if you’re out and about … what establishments are open 24 hours? 2itch tries to answer that question for you by serving as a map and index of establishments open 24 hours. Coverage and data is currently better for metropolitan areas and locations along major interstates. The site relies on data from users to provide direction to stores, services, restaurants, hospitals, etc. that are always open. They also offer a Windows Vista sidebar gadget and are developing an iPhone location aware application.
