Headline of the Week:  Tesla’s Battery Gigafactory
Inspired by Adam F. and others who have gone before Miri and I have been evaluating a solar panel installation at our house. A key design constraint is the amount of electricity that is consumed by the household. This is largely because the solution is grid connected and net-metered.

Headline of the Week:  RIP VCR
It’s generally most interesting to think about new information technologies and how they might play out as they begin to find their legs in products and services and especially within higher education. This week it has been interesting to reflect on the impact of a technology coming to the end of its commercial life.

Headline of the Week:  Iowa Fiber Alliance - An Idea for Lower Cost Internet Bandwidth and Services
Yesterday Adam and I drove to Cedar Falls and attended a meeting of representatives of a number of eastern Iowa municipal telecommunication utilities, representatives of communities that are considering establishing municipal telecommunication utilities and us, who participate in the Decorah Metronet (DMN).

Headline of the Week:  Makerspaces, Cybersecurity and Cyberinfrastructure - Ideas from CLAC Conference
Last week Diane Gossman, Director of User Services, and I attended the
Annual Conference for the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges. CLAC is a consortium of 70 member institutions that focuses on sharing technology information among peers to support and advance the liberal arts. Our conference was graciously hosted by Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

ITS Weekly - 3 June 2016

Headline of the Week: Uber Receives $3.5B from Saudi Arabia
Taxis have been on my mind this week. Really. For quite some time I’ve been encouraging my dad to re-learn to use cabs (he used to be a cab driver in Minneapolis during his Luther Seminary days). My sister visited this week and I suggested that one of their “dates” be taking a cab ride.

Headline of the Week:  Virtual Reality - Oculus Rift - Alum Erik Dotseth’s Early Experience
Facebook this week fed me a post from a recent alum and Technology Help Desk worker, Erik Dotseth (2015). He had recently acquired a device from Oculus called the Rift. The Rift is a virtual reality (VR) headset.
