OS X Mavericks and Luther Workstations

On Oct 22, Apple released their newest operating system, Mavericks (OS X 10.9). In a change from past practices, Mavericks was released as a free upgrade for any computer running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), or 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

At this time, LIS will *not* be installing Mavericks on any Luther owned workstations. This includes Faculty and Staff and Lab workstations.

While initial impressions are favorable, LIS has not yet conducted extensive testing and cannot be certain that all of our applications, devices, and so forth are compatible with Mavericks. Likewise, some Luther workstations may not meet the system requirements necessary to run Mavericks.

Support for Mavericks will be limited as LIS and the Technology Help Desk learn the new operating system and make the necessary adjustments. Other issues will require patching by Apple or other vendors and may take some time.

Users who opt to install Mavericks themselves will do so at their own risk. Significant issues may result in the workstation being re-imaged back to an early OS (dependent on the model of workstation). Known issues include: Performance (slow downs, sluggishness), USB and/or Multiple Monitor Connections, Gmail (aka Norse Mail) with Apple Mail, and Random WiFi Disconnects among others.
