The wireless network (SSID) called LCWireless5G has been available in Miller and Dieseth since December. Starting today, we are expanding the availability of this SSID to everywhere that our wireless network supports the 5Ghz frequency.
If your computer or device is able to see LCWireless5G, LIS requests that you connect to it instead of LCWireless.
LCWireless5G is part of our effort to improve performance on Luther’s wireless network. WifFi standards specify two radio frequencies that can be used – 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. The 5Ghz frequency has more channels and fewer sources of interference and generally provides better performance. Dual-Band devices are able to see both frequencies while Single Band devices are only able to see the 2.4Ghz frequency.
When a Dual Band device sees both frequencies, it will make a choice on which to use. On occasion the 2.4Ghz is chosen over the 5Ghz. LCWireless5G is a way to encourage Dual band devices to use the 5Ghz frequency and hopefully have better performance for all devices.
