Roy M. Johnson Jr., age 94, of Verona, Wis., passed away on May 30, 2017. He was born on June 28, 1922, in Stoughton, the son of Roy and Julia (Larson) Johnson. He graduated from Boscobel High School and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa prior to entering the service in World War II. Roy was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific as Navigator on the USS Fond Du Lac. After the war, he returned to college, graduating in 1947, from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., with a degree in Business Administration.
He married Helen Elizabeth Watson on July 31, 1948, at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Elkhorn. Roy worked for many years in the grocery business, starting as a boy at his father's Royal Blue Grocery store in Boscobel, and later managed and owned the store. From there he worked for Wilson Meats, Red Owl Stores, and Stop-N-Go, retiring in 1983. He was a longtime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Madison, serving twice as Senior Warden, along with several other roles.
Roy is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Johnson; children, Janet (Steven) Peck, of Richland, Wash., Mark (Cheri) Johnson, of Grayslake, Ill., and Kirk (Becka) Johnson of Verona; grandchildren, Noah (Susie) Peck, Adam (Christina) Peck, Nathan (Julia) Peck, Samuel (Andrea) Peck, Christina Johnson, Alan Johnson, Bryan Johnson, Rachel (Craig) Montry, Benjamin (Kendra) Johnson and Kimberly Johnson; nine great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, James (Doris) Watson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Leigh Hendricks; and brother-in-law, Robert Watson.
Funeral services were held at ST. LUKE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 4011 Major Ave., Madison, on June 5, 2017, with Father Don Fleischman presiding. Burial was at Eastside Cemetery, Stoughton.
