Carl Oscar Myhre, 90, of Rolette, N.D., passed away Aug. 19, 2017, at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, N.D., following a short illness. Carl was born July 24, 1927, in Rolette to C.O. “Oscar” Myhre and Ruth (Gilje) Myhre, their only child. The family lived in Minneapolis for a time when Carl was a child, but returned to Rolette, where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served in San Diego. Following his discharge from the Navy, Carl attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he played in the college band and graduated with a degree in business. On December 27, 1953, he married Lois Lindberg of Bottineau, whom he had met on a blind date.
Carl worked for a time at the Northwestern National Bank in Minneapolis, but returned to Rolette to join the Rolette State Bank, of which his grandfather was one of the founders, and his father was president. Carl eventually became president of the bank and served on the bank’s Board of Directors until his death. He was very dedicated to and involved in promoting and improving the Rolette community, working on many projects over the years including the Rolette County Housing Authority low-rent housing and the Rolette Shopping Center. He acted as an alderman for the City of Rolette 1966-1994, stepping in as interim mayor for a time, and served on the Rolette County Housing Authority Board 1960-2002. He also served on the Concordia College Board of Regents (1976-1981) and the Metigoshe Ministries Board of Directors for nine years. He was active in many civic and community groups including the American Legion, the Masons, Commercial Club, the volunteer fire department, Valle Lutheran Church Council, Sons of Norway, and others. He played clarinet in the N.D. State Legion Band for over 40 years.
Carl had a deep love of travel, and he and Lois honeymooned in Europe, traveled several times to Norway, and enjoyed taking cruises and spending time on Maui. They took the family on a road trip most summers, piling everyone into the station wagon and taking in the sights around the United States and Canada. They loved returning annually to Clear Lake in Manitoba with family, creating wonderful memories there. In later years, Carl and Lois enjoyed spending a month or two in the winter in Panama City Beach, Fla., welcoming their family and friends to visit them there. Carl was an avid sportsman who greatly enjoyed hunting deer and waterfowl, and taking the annual fishing trip to Canada, in earlier years with his friends and in later years with his sons and grandson. He played on baseball, bowling, and curling teams through the years, and he enjoyed golf and played a variety of courses. He had a number of pet dogs, all named “Mike”; he loved chocolate, ice cream, peanut butter, and a good steak; and he had a sharp sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Lois, an infant son Jon, and a stillborn daughter. He is survived by his children Carla (Steve) Myhre-Vogt of Buffalo, Minn.; Jay (Judi) Myhre of Rolette; and Mark Myhre of Rolette; and grandchildren Carter Vogt (fiancée Kelsey Hannack) of Hugo, Minn.; Tucker Vogt of Edina, Minn.; Nicholas Myhre and Madison Myhre both of Rolette.
Funeral Services were held on Aug. 24, 2017, at Valle Lutheran Church, Rolette, N.D., with Pastor Gene Wilson officiating. Burial followed at Rolette City Cemetery, Rolette, N.D.
