Spencer Ameroy Gedestad, 94, of Sacramento, Calif., died May 30th, 2017, at his home. Spencer was born July 15, 1922, in Petersburg, N.D., to Almer and Inez Gedstad.
After graduating from Petersburg High Spencer attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, graduating with a degree in chemistry. After graduating from Luther he joined the U.S. Navy and attended The University of Louisville Dental School, earning his DMD degree in Dentistry in 1946. He then served as a Naval Dentist from 1947-1949 before being Honorably Discharged.
After his Navy service, Spencer and Patricia moved to Sacramento in 1950. Spencer went into private practice at that time, and continued to practice for the next 50 years, retiring in 2000. In the last 20 of those years, Spencer had the pleasure of practicing with his son Douglas.
He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sacramento since 1951, serving in many capacities of the church's stewardship and service to the community. The St. John's community was the foundation of his life in Sacramento and reflected his compassion and commitment to serving others. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was an avid Giants and 49ers fan. He also enjoyed playing golf. He was a founding member of Valley Hi Country Club and remained actively playing into his 90s. His regular threesome included his two friends, 90 and 96 years old respectively.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Patricia, and his four children Stephen, Douglas Susan, and Dennis, as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at St. John's Lutheran Church on June 10. Donations can be made to St. John's Program for Real Change which funds St. John's Women's Shelter or the Sutter Health Foundation of Sacramento's Hospice program. Funeral services are under the direction of George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers.
