Edgar N. Nordgaard, age 85, a long-time resident of Wilton, Conn., formerly of New Canaan, Conn., died Aug. 11, 2016, in Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness with his loving wife and daughters by his side. Born in Glenwood, Minn., in June 1931, he was the son of the late Edgar ‘23 and Esther Nordgaard. Ed was the husband of Nita Nordgaard to whom he was married for 59 years.
Ed graduated from Glenwood (Minn.) High School and earned his Business Administration degree from the University of Minnesota.
Ed’s working life spanned 80 years, beginning at age five when he regularly cleaned out the popcorn machine at the town bandstand for a dime and ending on June 30, 2016, when he retired from consulting for the Town of Wilton and Wilton Board of Education regarding employee health benefits. For 37 years in between he held a number of management and executive positions for Equitable Life, Equicor, and Cigna, before launching a consulting business with clients including 3M, Unocal, and U.S. Steel. He was a member of the Financial Executives Institute and the Council on Employee Benefits.
Ed was an active member of The Congregational Church Of New Canaan, The Rotary of New Canaan where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, The Kiwanis Club of Wilton, and the Silvermine Golf Club. He held board positions at the Silvermine Woods Homeowners Association and the Pelican Lakes Association.
In every professional and volunteer position, as well as with his family and friends, he was an advocate and negotiated for solutions that benefitted all parties involved. He actively mentored his staff, family members, and friends, always listening and giving sound career advice to anyone who asked.
Ed cherished growing up in a small Minnesota town which fostered his curiosity, kindness, and generosity, as well as his love of fishing, golf, and cars. Later he also enjoyed windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, downhill and cross-country skiing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kristi Nordgaard and her husband Tim Nelson of Guilford, Conn., and Tracie Jaser and her husband Kevin of Wilton, Conn., and their son Luke. He was predeceased by his sister Katherine (Nordgaard) Malmer ‘49.
