Helen Joann (Mart) Martinko, formerly of Sharpsville, Pa., passed away on May 5, 2017, after an extended illness. She was 83.
Helen was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Knoxville, Iowa, to Esther Carlson Mart and Ernest Mart. She graduated from Des Moines (Iowa) Technical High School in 1951 and attended Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, from where she received a teaching certificate in 1954. She taught in Minnesota and Montana before moving to the Shenango Valley area. She graduated from Youngstown State University in 1959.
Helen married James Richard Martinko in 1960. He preceded her in death.
Helen taught elementary school in Brookfield for over 35 years. She retired from full-time teaching in 1995 but taught preschool and tutored in her retirement. Helen volunteered and was a member of Sharon Regional Health System Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, and Christ Lutheran Church. Helen also belonged to College Club of Sharon and Thursday Nite Mixed Bowling League at Thornton Hall.
Helen is survived by two sons; Kevin Martinko (Moe) of Grafton, Ohio, and Gary Martinko (Beverly) of New Wilmington; seven half-siblings, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Her parents, a brother, Larry Mart, and five half-siblings preceded her in death.

A memorial service was held May 20, 2017, at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Lozano officiating.
