Immersion Program

General Information

The New Student Immersion Experiences are designed to give new Luther students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, reflect on the natural environment, and share in fellowship with current Luther students, as they enhance their personal development and transition to college life. Each group will be led by two current Luther students. A faculty guest will accompany each trip.

The programs will take place during the week immediately preceding new student orientation, Saturday, August 20- Friday, August 27. Students will have an opportunity to move into their rooms prior to departure for their assigned trip, room key pick up will be from 9 – 11 a.m. There will be a general orientation for students and parents at noon on August 20th, with the official start time of the Immersion program beginning at 3 p.m. Students officially leave for their trip on Sunday morning, returning the following Friday. Saturday morning there is an official wrap-up and equipment return.

Objectives

  • Develop personal growth and greater self-confidence through immersion in nature and participation in personal and group challenges
  • Build camaraderie with other new Luther students through teamwork and overcoming mutual challenges, building trust, compassion and empathy
  • Develop a greater awareness and appreciation for the natural world, to foster stewardship
  • Learn new skills and interests in outdoor exploration and recreation
