Programmer Analyst

Luther College is seeking a self-motivated, detail-oriented programmer analyst to provide software development and support for information systems serving students, faculty, staff and alumni. The successful applicant will join our Software Development team within Library and Information Services. Knowledge of procedural computer languages and experience using SQL databases is required. Bachelor’s degree in a computer related field or equivalent combination of education and related experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and analytical skills. Technical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, open source LAMP, security, high availability, and network interfaces is preferred. Our campus workplace is a mix of Windows, Linux, and Mac.

This full-time, benefits-eligible position is within Library and Information Services (LIS), an integrated information service organization delivering library and information technology based service to the faculty, students, and administration of Luther College. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The Programmer Analyst develops software applications, creates reports, supports the database, web servers, and network infrastructure for vendor-supplied and in-house developed systems. Responsibilities include developing web-based software applications and system interfaces for a variety of databases, Active Directory, and openLDAP. This person will work with the Software Development and Network and Systems teams in Library and Information Services to provide technical support for vendor supplied and internally developed software systems.

  • Provides support for the Datatel [13] student information system software, data structures, and SQL Server Reporting Services for data transfers and integration with auxiliary systems.
  • Assists users in querying and reporting information from database systems using SQL Server Reporting Services and other reporting tools to query vendor-supplied databases.
  • Prepares instructional documentation, training and consultation for users on software application use. Prepares internal technical documentation for LIS on software and system installation, annual maintenance, trouble-shooting problems, and on-going support.
  • Assists in the enhancement and maintenance of existing databases and of appropriate security measures for user setup and access to sensitive data.
  • Assists in research and system development for web applications and interfaces to database systems, Active Directory, and OpenLDAP [15].
  • Participates with the Director of Software Development and the Software Development team in the establishment of priorities of software development projects.
  • Participates with the Director of Software Development, Network and Systems team, and the Software Development team in long and short range planning for systems and network infrastructure needs, services, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Position Qualifications

  • Education and knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent combination of education and related experience is preferred.
  • Experience: System analysis, web-based application programming, report creation, and systems programming. Must have knowledge of SQL relational databases and web or structured programming languages.
  • Must have advanced analytical and problem solving skills. Requires considerable judgment to work independently toward general results, devising methods, modifying or adapting standard procedures to meet different conditions.
  • Requires working with confidential data, checking for accuracy of data that is critical to the business of the college, and attention to detail in testing applications before placing an application in production use.
  • Requires organization, written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and with a project team.
  • While performing the duties of this job, this employee is sitting most of the time, but duties may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time; includes exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or the ability to lift, carry, push or pull or otherwise move objects with a negligible amount of force.
  • Atmosphere or environment provide pleasant, smoke free, air conditioned in summer and comfortably warm in winter.

Assistant Women’s Basketball/Residence Hall Director

Luther College is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Women’s Basketball/Residence Hall Director.  The position will assist the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and the Director of Residence Life.  Basketball duties will include, but are not limited to: recruiting, skill instruction, practice planning, team management, fundraising, summer camps.  Residence life duties will include, but are not limited to: administering housing operations for one residence hall, training and supervising resident assistants, and assisting the area coordinator with disciplinary matters.  A master’s degree is preferred, BA and collegiate playing experience required.  Candidate must have strong knowledge of basketball, leadership, communication, organizational, conflict mediation, and computer skills.  Candidate must be willing to work weekends and evenings as well as travel.  Compensation includes salary, furnished apartment and meal plan.  This is a full time, 10 month appointment starting August 1st.

Field Placement Officer

Luther College seeks a qualified individual for the 10-month/year, part-time position of Field Placement Officer for the Education Department.  The field placement officer will be responsible for the development of applications, placement and assessment materials, and would seek additional placements, especially in diverse school settings.  Additional duties include identifying, training and communicating with supervising teachers of Luther student teachers.  As is required by both the college and the Iowa Department of Education and NCATE, the coordinator will collect data about Luther candidates and the program.  The position reports to the Education Department Chair and works closely with the licensure officer and office administrative assistant.

The successful candidate will possess a current teaching license and five years teaching experience.  Previous successful leadership, organization and management experience, experience and knowledge of quality schools, classrooms, and settings for students in a clinical setting, and experience in diverse school settings is required.

Anthropology Laboratory and Collections Manager and Instructor in Museum Studies

Luther College seeks a qualified individual for the full-time (1.0 FTE) position of Anthropology Laboratory and Collections Manager Instructor in Museum Studies.  Position is responsible for training and supervising undergraduate work study students, managing Luther’s Archaeological, Ethnographic and Numismatic collections, directing  daily laboratory operations and budget, developing and implementing an outreach program, and planning and installing exhibits of materials from the Luther College collections.  Manager will ensure compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).  The position will include teaching one course annually in the Museum Studies program, including Introduction to Museum Studies and Collections Management. 

The successful candidate will have an MA/MS in Anthropology or Museum Studies with a concentration in Anthropological Collections.  Experience in the management preservation of material culture, both archaeological and ethnographic, and familiarity with NAGPRA, CRM, and Midwestern U.S. archaeology preferred.  Teaching experience highly desirable.

Men and Women Tennis Coach--Intern

Director of Public Information

Luther College is accepting applications for the position of Director of Public Information. The successful candidate for the position will be skilled in performing a variety of specialized duties: developing and distributing marketing and communications materials, training staff and student workers to produce communications products and services and performing administrative functions to increase the college’s visibility and institutional image. Preference given to candidates with a degree in marketing, communication, journalism, public relations or related field. Minimum five years’ experience in professional positions in marketing, communication, journalism, public relations or related field. The Director of Public Information serves on the communications marketing team and will develop and produce materials for information exchange and public relations with all external and some internal constituents of the college.  This position reports to the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing and supervises a staff of one full-time and two part-time assistants and about 25 student photographers, videographers and writers. Duties include production of a major portion of the photographs, videos and text used to relay key messages through websites, publications, e-newsletters, social media, news media and other distribution methods. The successful candidate will have a portfolio of materials produced for both print and web distribution. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Preference given to candidates with experience in training and supervising professional staff and student workers, media relations, emergency and crisis communications, basic graphic design and layout,  copy editing and proofreading, project planning and timeline development, and who have a personable demeanor, good organizational skills, and ability to be a team player.
