Staff Day Activities
This year's Staff Day will be held Thursday, June 6, 2013. The theme, "Camp Luther," is designed to provide some relaxed time together after a long academic year and to grow in appreciation for the knowledge and gifts of members of the community.
Camp begins promptly at noon with lunch served in the cafeteria followed by your choice of camp-themed breakout sessions. We will regroup at 3:15 p.m. in the CFL for a closing program and the announcement of the 2013 Staff Excellence Award winners. All staff are free to go home at 4 p.m. Staff attending Staff Day may wear shorts, tee-shirts and sneakers for the day, or may change at noon, depending on their business requirements during the morning; check with your supervisor.
Check out the available sessions (note: please keep in mind that not all sessions are available for each time slot) and complete the Staff Day Activities form when you're ready:

- Gardening--Gardening is one of the best ways to eat more fresh food, increase physical activity and enjoy the nice summer weather. This session will provide information on how to start a simple garden at home, as well as an opportunity to roll up your sleeves and do some planting. Participants will receive a transplant and a pot to take home. Maren Stumme-Diers, Jon Jensen and Perry Halse are camp gardening instructors.
- Ghost stories--Sorry, no campfire but still lots of fun! Camp instructor Clara Van Zanten will lead a short story session and discussion on “The Monkey’s Paw." Creepy!
- Indian History--Do you have an interest in Native American History? Camp instructor Colin Betts will take you on a journey of our area from the late 1600’s to early 1700’s. He’ll talk about which groups/tribes were here when the Europeans first arrived.

- Know What You Eat--Health claims on food packages can be confusing and it’s sometimes hard to reconcile the information on the front of the package with what’s on the nutrition facts panel on the back of the package. This is especially true when you are trying to cut calories, fat and carbohydrates. Among other important nutrition tips, let camp instructor Wendy Stevens teach you how to decipher food nutrition labels.
- Personality Types--Are you interested in knowing what personality type you are? Join camp instructor Keley Smith Keller who will give you vital information on assessing your own type of personality and helpful tips on how different personality types can work together.
- Pinhole Photography--What is it? Pinhole photography is making photographs using a camera fitted with a tiny hole known as a pinhole in the place of a lens. Learn more about the exciting art of pinhole photography with camp instructor Aaron Lurth.
- Prairie Lands--Get outside and explore the wonders of Iowa’s forgotten landscape, the Tall Grass Prairie with camp instructor Emily Neal. Explore your prairie roots, learn about biodiversity and prairie habitat while learning to be a kid again in this sea of endless beauty. Dress for the out-of-doors. (In the event of rain, activities will be held indoors.) (Offered only at 1:15 p.m.)
- Renewable Energy Tour--Take a guided tour of the wind turbine and solar field with Jay Uthoff and Jim Martin-Schramm. Load vans in the CFL parking lot. (If it is raining this session will be cancelled and participants will need to join another offering).

She'll lead you through a 45-minute yoga routine that will loosen up your shoulders and neck, stretch your legs, strengthen your back, and restore your body. No experience required; mats provided. (Offered only at 2:15 p.m.)
