Sophos Anti-Virus - Windows Installation

Before installing Sophos, un-install any anti-virus protection software that is on your computer. These instructions assume an old version of Sophos on Windows Vista, but should also work for Windows XP and earlier versions.

  1. Click on Start – Control Panel – Programs and Features.
  2. Select Sophos Anti-Virus and click Uninstall.
  3. Click Next and then Finish.
  4. Select Sophos AutoUpdate and click Uninstall
  5. Reboot your computer.

How to Install Upgraded Version

You must have a working Internet connection for these instructions to work.

  1. Download Sophos Anti-Virus:
    1. Go to http://sophos.luther.edu
    2. In the section labeled “Install and Configure Sophos Antivirus”, click on the link for the appropriate operating system (i.e. Windows XP, Vista, 7, or Mac OS 10.4+)
    3. Download the file to your computer.
  2. Double Click on the downloaded file to begin installation.
  3. Click Install.
  4. Click Next and then Next again.
  5. At the Update Source Screen, enter the following in the Address field:
  6. Enter your Luther Norse Key username and password.
  7. Click Next twice and allow Sophos to install. It could take several minutes.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Right Click on the Blue Shield icon by the clock and select Update Now to download the latest updates.

Updating Your Norse Key

ITS requires that your Norse Key password be changed every six months for security reasons. When this is done, you must also update your password in Sophos in order to continue downloading anti-virus definitions and keep your computer protected.

Installation Error Messages

Windows XP or Windows 7 : ‘You do not have sufficient permissions’

When installing Sophos Anti-Virus on a computer running either Windows XP (Home Edition) or Windows 7, one may encounter the following error message:

‘You do not have sufficient privileges to run the Sophos Anti-Virus main application. You are not a member of one of the Sophos groups. In order to be able to launch this application, you must be a member of SophosAdministrator, SophosPowerUser or SophosUser group. Please contact the Administrator.’
