Norse Mail - Email Aliases (Requesting & Configuring)

Norse Mail users may request an email alias in addition to their normal address. An alias allows emails to be sent to a different address that is then forwarded to your normal mailbox. This is helpful in cases of simplifying an address (i.e. [email protected] vs [email protected]) or for short term purposes (i.e. [email protected]).

Two Important Notes Regarding Aliases

  1. Aliases do not replace your Norse Key. You will still log into Norse Mail or any other Luther service using your normal Norse Key username and password.
  2. When using Norse Calendar, others must use your normal Norse Key username and not your alias. Otherwise, your schedule will appear completely empty.

Requesting an Email Alias

if you would like to have an email alias created, please submit a ticket at or contact the Technology Help Desk at x1000 or [email protected].

Rules for Aliases

Aliases cannot match the current Luther address scheme (first 4 letters of the last name, first 2 letters of the first name followed by two digits), a department on campus (i.e. – President, ITS, choir, etc), be offensive or inappropriate, or other criteria as defined by ITS.

Organizations or Departments should contact the Technology Help Desk to arrange for a proper email address or mailing list rather than using an Alias.

Setting Up an Approved Alias

  1. Log into Norse Mail.
  2. Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and choose Settings .
  3. Click on Accounts.
  4. Click Add another email address you own.
  5. Enter the approved email alias in the Email address field and click Next Step.
  6. The Verification message will arrive in your inbox within several minutes (though it may take longer during busy times).
  7. Click the link provided in the email that is sent to you to verify the new email alias.
  8. Sign out of Norse Mail and back in to begin using your alias.

When Composing a new message, the From field will now include a drop down menu to allow you to select your email alias. In the Settings – Accounts, you can set your alias to be your default account.
