Release & Renew IP Address for all Operating Systems

It may be necessary to manually refresh your workstation’s network address information to solve network issues. This is done by Releasing and Renewing your IP Address. Typically, a reboot of the workstation will solve the problem, though on occasion it will have to be done manually.

Windows 95/98/ME

To determine your current IP Address

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type winipcfg in the box.
  4. Click OK.

To Release Your IP Address

  1. Click on the Release button.

To Renew Your IP Address

  1. Click on the Renew button.

Windows XP/Vista

To determine your current IP Address

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Type cmd or command in the box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. A black window (DOS prompt) will appear.
  6. Type ipconfig /all in the DOS prompt and hit Enter.

To Release Your IP Address

  1. In the DOS prompt, type ipconfig /release.

To Renew Your IP Address

  1. In the DOS Prompt, type ipconfig /renew.

Macintosh OS X

To determine your current IP Address

  1. Click Apple Menu.
  2. Click System Preferences.
  3. Click Network.

To Release Your IP Address

  1. Click Show.
  2. Click Network Port Configurations.
  3. Uncheck Built In Ethernet.
  4. Click Apply Now.

To Renew Your IP Address

  1. Click Show.
  2. Click Network Port Configurations.
  3. Check Built In Ethernet.
  4. Click Apply Now.
