Luther College to celebrate Commencement May 25

Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 25, in Carlson Stadium where 527 members of the Luther class of 2014 will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Tickets are required for those attending the ceremony.

Guests without tickets will find closed-circuit television viewing in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall and Marty's in Dahl Centennial Union. Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin will give the commencement speech.

Luther Commencement weekend events begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 22, with a Senior Send-Off at Hotel Winneshiek's Steyer Opera House and Ballroom.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra will perform in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Saturday events include the Nurse Pinning Ceremony for nursing majors of the class of 2014, will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall; the Social Work Program Celebration from 10 a.m.-noon in the Farwell Hall Lounge; and the Senior Athlete Recognition Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.

Luther will host an all-college picnic on Preus Library Lawn from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. Attendees should bring something to sit on and dress comfortably. Rain location is the Dahl Centennial Union Cafeteria. Cost for the picnic is $8.50 per person.

The Saturday Music Showcase will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The program includes performances by Luther's Concert Band, directed by Joan deAlbuquerque, followed by the Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán.         

A Senior Art Exhibition reception will take place on Saturday in the Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts from 4-5 p.m.

Baccalaureate is at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Guests are to be seated by 7:45 p.m. Baccalaureate is a time for seniors and their families to gather with the Luther community to celebrate and give thanks for the students' years at Luther. The ceremony will be streamed live at www.luther.edu/ministries/baccalaureate. Audio recordings of the service are available upon request from the Office of College Ministries, (563) 387-1040. A freewill offering will be taken and designated to local and global charities in honor of the senior class.

The Commencement ceremony is Sunday at 10 a.m. in Carlson Stadium. Guests with tickets should be seated by 9:45 a.m.

A Commencement brunch follow the ceremony from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in Dahl Centennial Union Cafeteria. No reservations are required. Cost is $8 per person.
