River North Dance Chicago, a jazz-based contemporary dance company, will present a high energy performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on Luther College's campus.
Tickets for the performance, part of Luther's Center Stage Series of performing arts, are available online at tickets.luther.edu.
The repertoire includes "The Worst Pies in London" from Sweeney Todd, "I Close My Eyes Until the End," "Beat," "Renatus," "Havana Blue" and "Eva," a new commission. "Eva" is set to the music of the American vocalist Eva Cassidy, (1963-96), whose soul-stirring songs melded the styles of soul, jazz, folk and gospel music. RNDC is dedicating the performance of "Eva" to Cassidy, an artist lost too soon and music like hers, designed to touch listeners on an emotional level.
After the performance the audience is invited to ask questions and participate in a discussion with the dancers.
Frank Chaves, RNDC artistic director, says, "I don't want people to just come see River North; I want people to feel River North." The company produces, promotes and presents dance with a goal of making connections between dancers and the audience to convey a complete spectrum of human emotions in a single evening. The shows combine athleticism and artistry with bold, theatrical flair.
Founded in 1989, RNDC has toured in many countries including Korea, Germany, Switzerland and Russia.
Tickets for the performance are $27 for adults, $25 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. They can be purchased online at http://tickets.luther.edu, at the Luther College Ticket Office, open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11a.m.-3 p.m.; and Tuesday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. or by calling (563) 387-1357.
This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional contributions from the Iowa Arts Council.
RNDC will also present "Street Beat: Dance through the Decades" as part of the School Matinee Performance Series at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Community members and school groups are welcome to this family friendly performance sponsored by Winneshiek Medical Center and Mayo Clinic Health System.
