The Luther English department and the Center for Sustainable Communities present Kate Lebo, author of the new book "A Commonplace Book of Pie," for three events Tuesday, Nov. 19 on the Luther campus.
Lebo will teach a writing workshop in a Luther creative writing nonfiction course at 12:45 p.m. in room 105 of the Franklin W. Olin Building. Luther will open extra seats to the public as the room permits.
Luther will host Lebo in a public reading of her new book at 4 p.m. in Olin Building Room 102, as well as a pie-making workshop by Lebo at 7:15 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 302 W. Broadway, Decorah. Tickets for the pie-making workshop are $5 and the event is limited to 15 participants.
For complete details on the Lebo visit or to reserve a spot for the workshop, contact Andy Hageman, Luther assistant professor of English, at email@example.com.
Lebo is a celebrated writer whose works have appeared in Best New Poets, Gastronomica and Poetry Northwest among other journals.
Her first book "A Commonplace Book of Pie," was published by Chin Music Press in October 2013. She is currently working on a cookbook titled, "Pie School: Lessons in Fruit, Flour and Butter," with Sasquatch Books to be published in fall 2014. She is also the editor of the literary journal, "Filter."
She opened Pie School, a pastry academy, in 2012. Pie School's mission is to crumble dessert clichés by teaching students how to make their best homemade pie ever. People can book a Pie School session in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, New York, Boston, Minneapolis and Iowa City. Students will leave the class with a pie baked themselves, a copy of Lebo's new book and a collection of poems, ephemera and recipes from class.
Lebo also hosts "Pie Stand," an event that uses pie to create conversations across communities in the United States.
