Center Stage Series: Weiss Kaplan Newman Trio to perform Sept. 27

September 25, 2013

The energetic and passionate piano trio, the Weiss Kaplan Newman Trio, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on Luther's campus.

The program, part of the college's Center Stage Series, consists of an all-Beethoven bill including the "Ghost" piano trio (op. 70, no.1), the "Pathétique" piano sonata (op.13, no.8), and the trio in E-flat major (op.70, no.2).

The program is intended to be one of two celebrations to highlight Luther's newly refurbished nine-foot Steinway piano, originally a gift to the Center for Faith and Life by the Luther College Women's Club.

The Weiss Kaplan Newman Trio consists of three highly accomplished soloists, Yael Weiss, piano; Mark Kaplan, violinist; and Clancy Newman, cellist. The ensemble is known for embracing the music of the future while offering fresh insights into traditional music masterpieces. Each performance brings a distinctive fusion of authority and experience, energy and passion.

In 2011 the trio released a CD of Brahms and Smetana trios through Bridge Records to great critical acclaim from such publications as Fanfare Magazine, which hailed it as "absolutely one fabulous chamber music recording you cannot afford to be without."

Tickets go on sale Sept. 5, and are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. They can be purchased at Luther's all-new ticket website, www.tickets.luther.edu, or by calling the Box Office at (563) 387-1357, or by visiting the Luther Box Office, open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-10:30 a.m. and 11a.m.-3 p.m.; and Tuesday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with extended hours on Thursdays 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
